The Hyundai Palisade is part of a small group of SUVs that have third-row seats, and for some families that is a pretty big deal. It’s stylish, aggressive front end and slim headlights give this modern SUV a unique and aggressive appearance, and it’s got a price tag worth buying one brand new. It’s one of a few great options in the Hyundai lineup this year, but there’s just one small recall that has consumers a little concerned.

How severe is the recall?

The recall sounds worse than it actually might be, and it doesn’t affect all of the 2020 models that were produced. In fact, the NHTSA announced that less than 12,000 models of the Palisade should be affected.

The recall is in regards to the side curtain airbags, and it prevents them from effectively activating. This happens when the bolts holding in the panel damage or puncture the airbag, meaning that the airbag doesn’t extend upon impact.

If the side airbag does not deploy on impact it could be potentially dangerous for passengers, but Hyundai is moving quickly to resolve the problems in any vehicle that may be affected, and it is only a concern if the car is in an accident before the recall is resolved. Because it isn’t a major airbag like the front airbags, this isn’t necessarily the worst recall problem

If you currently own a Hyundai Palisade or are looking to buy one, you can see if the vehicle was affected by the recall by simply checking the VIN number with the NHTSA safety hotline or contacting your local dealership. The recall repairs will be free of cost to owners and the repair time is minimal.

The Palisade still a great option

Regardless of this one recall, the Hyundai Palisade has high safety ratings and reliability scores according to Consumer Reports. Safety isn’t the only thing that the Palisade has to brag about. As one of the more modestly priced SUV options on the market, you’d expect a lower quality of care, but that isn’t the case here.

The interior of the Palisade is lined with soft-touch fabrics that look as good as they feel. The seats are comfortable, supportive, and spacious from the front row all the way to the back, and the cabin is well insulated to minimize road noise for a comfortable and quiet ride.

For a large SUV, the Palisade offers an enjoyable and quick driving experience. While it may not have the immediate-acceleration you’d expect from a sports car you won’t find yourself disappointed with the gas pedal. Paired with a moderately smooth suspension and this SUV feels unexpectedly luxurious.

Outside of the singular recall, there haven’t been any concerning reliability problems, and the Palisade held up well in safety testing, which can help to reassure parents that this is still a great option for a family vehicle.
