If you’re looking for a safe hatchback, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster may not be the best option. It turns out to be one of the most dangerous vehicles you can buy. Check out why the Hyundai Veloster isn’t the safest option.

How safe is the 2019 Hyundai Veloster?

According to MotorJunkie, the Hyundai Veloster is one of the most dangerous vehicles you can buy. It landed as #19 on a list of the top twenty most dangerous automobiles. So, it may comfort you in knowing that 18 other vehicles are considered to be more dangerous.

The number one most dangerous vehicle is the Smart ForTwo car. It’s easy to see why this little car did so poorly in the crash tests as it flew through the air. It just isn’t big enough to handle impacts well.

However, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster isn’t a tiny car designed for urban driving. It’s a sporty hatchback that should be fun and comfortable for daily driving on the highway and more. So why did it make this list?

Hyundai Veloster safety ratings

Apparently, according to MotorJunkie, the Hyundai Veloster Turbo has subpar side impact test scores that could lead to driver fatalities. Also, they failed to mention which model year performed so poorly during crash tests.

Upon a little digging, we discovered the safety crash ratings for the 2019 Hyundai Veloster. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave this model an overall score of marginal after testing it.

With the IIHS, vehicles can score in each test category with a good, acceptable, marginal, and poor rating. So, scoring as marginal is like getting a D in school instead of an F. Also, part of the score involves how well crash dummies are protected from injuries during wrecks.

In the event of side impacts, the Hyundai Veloster was unable to protect the driver. The crash dummy received leg and pelvis injuries. Also, the rear passenger had a small risk for leg and pelvis injuries too.

During frontal crashes, the front driver was at risk for lower leg and foot injuries, and the structure and safety cage of the vehicle only scored a marginal rating. The head, chest, and torso were well protected, though.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Veloster safer?

Yes, the 2020 Hyundai Veloster is a much safer vehicle. It’s actually a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick, so it made a variety of significant improvements. It scored good in each crash-test area, which is like receiving an A, except for one. It scored acceptable for the child seat LATCH system being easy to use.

It had good roof strength, good side impact protection, good front impact protection, and more. The potential injuries to the pelvis and legs are no longer an issue with the 2020 model because the vehicle’s structure maintained space during impact.

Also, the 2020 Hyundai Veloster has forward collision prevention, pedestrian detection, safer LED headlights, blind-spot protection, lane-keeping assistance, and more modern safety features. The 2021 Hyundai Veloster hasn’t been tested yet, but we hope it continues to be a safer option.
