On Thursday morning, Jeep gave a glimpse into what it wants to do in the near future. A new premium luxury SUV model was introduced for the line-up. After weeks of teases on social media, Jeep unveiled the Grand Wagoneer. It seems the automaker wants to be the king of the golf course parking lot with an electric SUV.

The debut of the Grand Wagoneer was a hotly anticipated event. The online presentation was well executed. Sadly, the vehicle itself was disappointing. The design of the large SUV has an awkward upward sweeping rear window on the side profile that seems out of place. Large SUVs are, in essence, mobile bricks. Throwing a semi-rounded upward window-line seems out of place. Maybe it will look different in person. So, we look forward to getting these models into the press pool when available. Otherwise, the model looks like a nice, big SUV with a traditional seven slotted Jeep grille.

The interior, however, looks impressive. Ralph Gilles, the Head of Design for FCA was given the opportunity to describe the images and video of the interior. He promised that it will be a first-class experience for all the occupants of the three-row SUV. He said the intent was to create an interior that blends technology, functionality, detail, and luxury all in one. The passenger can pull up navigation and swipe it over to the driver, or continue to watch a television show that was paused in their home. A McIntosh 23-speaker sound system is incorporated for outstanding sound. Then, there is even a “Relax” mode that can be engaged when the vehicle is in Park. When that is active, the Aurora Borealis is projected on all the displays in the front of the cabin.

Many sustainable materials are used in the Grand Wagoneer. Onyx glass on the instrument panels, natural raw aluminum, genuine heat-treated lace wood, recyclable microfiber suede headliner, and thrive fiber carpet are all incorporated in an effort to be green conscious. The intent is to make Jeep the greenest SUV manufacturer in the world.

Grand Wagoneer powertrain and capability

The press release for the new model says it is a zero-emission electric vehicle. It will provide a near-silent on-road experience. The details of the plug-in hybrid electric system were not provided.

There will be three 4×4 systems to choose from. It can also tow up to 10,000 lbs. Articulation is provided by an independent front and rear suspension.

Pricing information

Sadly, no pricing information is available as of yet. However, the presentation of the vehicle emphasized premium luxury. So, the $100,000-plus price is conceivable. More information will be forth-coming as production nears. The vehicle is still a year out from production.

The fact that the vehicle is a premium luxury vehicle means that it will probably be a lower volume vehicle than when compared to a Ford Expedition or Chevrolet Tahoe. So, Cadillac’s Escalade may be a good luxury gauge for pricing. However, there is also the possibility that Jeep may try to leapfrog Cadillac and go after the Land Rover and Bentley Bentayga customer. They referred to the Grand Wagoneer as a premium luxury vehicle, not just luxury. If so, then it not meant to just stand out in the grocery store parking lot but also stand out at the ritzy golf club setting. But, pricing is still really up in the air at this early stage.

Overall impressions

Overall, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer seems to have a good package going, rear window profile notwithstanding. The vehicle will be able to climb, tow, and look good. It appears to be the perfect kind of vehicle for the Martha’s Vineyard set, where the previous Grand Wagoneers were popular for many years after they originally ceased production. No doubt, there will be some cheering from that neck of the woods.
