It’s time for an outrageous pickup truck. We yawned at the most recent SEMA Show from the huge amount of lifted pickups with roll bars and lights. These off-roaders all looked the same except for colors and wheels. They say “variety is the spice of life.” We don’t know who “they” are but we’ll acknowledge their sentiments. So, here’s some outrageous pickup truck variety courtesy of China’s JMC. This Yuhu concept is out to kill bland pickups.

Jiangling Motor Corporation or JMC is a vehicle manufacturer in China that would love to penetrate the US market. It already makes Ford-branded trucks and SUVs in China. Back in 2015, it presented this concept truck called “Yuhu” at the Shanghai Motor Show. Yuhu translates to “Domestic Tiger.” 

The JMC Yuhu is, in reality, a domestic brand of cheap pickups

The Yuhu name is used by JMC for a domestic line of cheap pickup trucks. They take virtually no inspiration from the Yuhu concept and that is too bad. 

After the 2015 Shanghai show, the Yuhu evaporated. That was to be expected here because Chinese concepts don’t have much play in countries where it doesn’t sell to. So, that was it-gone. We’d like to see it return as an actual production truck to add some adventure to the current off-roading malaise. 

The JMC Yuhu is larger than it looks

If it looks like a mini truck, it’s not. The Yuhu is over 16-feet long and 6.5-feet tall. No specs were given for the tires but they look to be 40s. Or maybe 50s-let’s say they look massive. With the cladding around them, it’s hard to tell where the wheel stops and the tire begins. Concepts don’t have to work well, they just need to look good. 

Integrated into the wheel design are those red-anodized thingies that look like belt buckles. Maybe they’re meant to actually be buckles that attach the cladding to the wheels? Who knows? Maybe the cladding is some sort of off-road protection or traction enhancement? But, enough about the wheels.

The headlights and taillights are detachable so as to be used as separate warning lights in the case of an emergency. Also, the rear window is retractable. 

The Yuhu is only a concept pickup so there is no interior or drivetrain

As for the powertrain, your guess is as good as ours. For the amount of work put into the concept, it’s just a pusher-meaning you push it wherever it needs to be because it’s only a concept. The same goes for the interior. JMC does say it will seat four comfortably, but we figured that was the case. 

We’d like to see it become a powered prototype. JMC might be afraid of what it will experience with those claw-like wheels biting into the road. 

Obviously, this is more of a brand boost than an actual consideration for production. The current line of JMC trucks is as bland as one can imagine, so this is hoped to give the brand a shot in the arm. It does for us.
