Most Hondas have excellent performance and reliability ratings. The HR-V and the CR-V  are exceptional, and so are its super eco-friendly sedans. But there are two models in Honda’s current lineup that are below par. 

The 2021 Passport is the least reliable Honda 

Honda brought back the Passport in 2019 after a 17-year hiatus. This Honda SUV is sandwiched between the CR-V and the roomier Pilot. We especially like the Passport’s rugged looks and performance capabilities. 

The Passport, in particular, can hold it’s own against a few diverse SUVs, including the Grand Cherokee and the BMW X5.  Though the Passport’s predicted reliability ratings aren’t as impressive, According to  Consumer Reports, the Passport is the least reliable Honda. CR gave it a 34 out of 100 for predicted reliability, which is below-average. 

CR’s data shows that newly redesigned vehicles have more problems. So with this in mind, the Passport’s dependability score isn’t that surprising. The most commonly reported owner spots include the Passport’s in-car electronics. 

Owners were frustrated that the Passport’s display screen would freeze up and that its voice commands weren’t easy to use. Additionally, some Passport owners had issues with their model’s body integrity, transmission minor, and drive system. 

The 2021 Odyssey is only better by a point 

CR says the Odyssey is only better than the Passport by a point as far as reliability is concerned. The Odyssey had few troubles in 2020, so this ranking isn’t surprising either. At this point, Honda has recalled the 2020 Odyssey five times for potential issues with its electrical system, latches, and backup camera.

There are few areas that Odyssey owners complain about the most, as CR highlights. The most common complaint about the Odyssey relates to its in-car electronics. Some owners have had minor issues, such as having a blank or “frozen” a display screen. One owner said that they had to get a hardware replacement. 

Other potential troubles spot for the Odyssey relate to its suspension and transmission minor. The Chrysler Pacifica has fewer problems based on CR’s research. However, the 2020 Odyssey still has an above-average owner satisfaction score.

What makes the 2021 Odyssey more attractive is that it offers the peppiness of a crossover, and it’s agile too. The current generation is now more efficient and comfortable than the previous model years. Plus, Honda has made the Odyssey more luxurious and convenient over the years. Available upgrades include leather upholstery, a wifi hotspot, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a built-in vacuum. 

Is it a bad idea to buy a Honda Passport or Odyssey?

As CR advises, it’s better to shop for vehicles with an above-average reliability rating for a better ownership experience. That said, you might want to consider Honda’s Pilot as an alternative to the Passport or Odyssey. It’s also worth considering the Toyota and Mazda competition in the midsize SUV class too. 

Judging the minivan segment is tougher. Currently, the only 2021 minivan that CR gave an excellent reliability score to is the Toyota Sienna. But if you have your heart set on either the Passport or the Odyssey, you might want to consider buying the extended warranty for additional protection.
