As you already know, Lexus is a car brand reputed for dependability. Not all 2020 models hold true to this dogma, however. One sedan that has enjoyed prestige as a Lexus favorite fell short big time, according to Consumer Reports.

The 2018 redesign of this popular Lexus sedan didn’t pack the punch we hoped it would. And it isn’t reflecting well on Consumer Reports predicted reliability ratings. The LS went from being a large, subtle ride that offered maximum comfort to being a too-wide and technologically cumbersome option in its segment of ultra luxury cars.

Consumer Reports gave it a 1 out of 5 for reliability

The Lexus LS, once known for its dependable comfort, was redesigned for the 2018 model year. Usually, this mean exciting new features. Maybe a new powertrain option or modernized tech. Cosmetic upgrades and exterior makeovers are looked forward to in a newly designed fresh generation. The fresh gen 2018 Lexus LS received all of this when it debuted in 2017.

Sometimes changes mean time to figure out some minor kinks. But the fifth gen Lexus LS redesign is falling short in a major and unexpected area. The 2020 Lexus LS sedan is the most unreliable Lexus, going by Consumer Reports data.

Lexus LS reliability history

The history charts shown for the CR reliability ratings show reliability history from 2000 through 2019. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles are used to collect data for how any given model holds up. The data comes from 17 potential trouble spots. These areas of concern range from the engine, transmission, and brakes to electronics, technology, and power equipment.

Owner Satisfaction

In addition to earning low marks for predicted reliability, the 2020 LS also earned low owner satisfaction ratings. The data collected from LS owners shows a common theme. Consequently, many owners would steer clear of this model if given a second chance. The lease reliable Lexus isn’t making people happy.

Out of those who own a new generation Lexus LS only about half would buy one again. Compare that to a car with good owner satisfaction scores and you’ll see the difference. For example, the Tesla Model S is pleasing consumers. 87% of Model S owners would go back and buy the same car again.

Consumer reports sends out a massive survey. One question asks: “considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?” The percentage of those who answered “definitely yes” to the question asked by the CR Annual Auto Survey determines the satisfaction score.

The new Lexus LS has not received good ratings from CR. In fact, it is the least reliable Lexus model on the market. But, this isn’t the end all be all of LS ratings. We are definitely hoping for an improved fifth gen, though we aren’t holding our breath. There are some redeeming features such as maxed-out luxury, fuel economy, and price compared to its German competitors. However the general CR consensus is that this sedan can be passed up for now. CR ratings say it is the least reliable Lexus.
