The Lucid Gravity Might Be the Next Big Thing for EVs
At the beginning of September, EV startup Lucid Motors revealed its electric luxury sedan, the 2021 Lucid Air. But this budding auto company isn’t stopping there — it has plans to greatly expand its EV lineup. This should eventually include an electric crossover SUV that has been dubbed the Lucid Gravity, Car and Driver reports. Here’s what we know so far about Lucid Motors’ current and future lineup.
It’s early days yet

Although Lucid Motors previously gained recognition for supplying batteries to Formula E race cars, this is its first foray into the EV design world. As such, there’s still an air of mystery about these vehicles. What we do know is that the Lucid Gravity is set to be based on the Lucid Air’s platform. Of the Air, Car and Driver states: “[It] aspires to be much more than a mere Tesla rip-off.”
While Tesla may be the dominant name in the EV world, the Air does look like something to get excited about. It has an estimated range of up to 517 miles, and its most powerful trim makes a whopping 1,080 hp. Tests indicate that the Air can travel a quarter-mile in less than 10 seconds, making it strikingly fast.
Everything we know about the Lucid Gravity
While Lucid Motors teased the Lucid Gravity during the launch of its electric sedan, the automaker has yet to release many concrete details. In fact, even its name may change — “Project Gravity” is its current title, but there’s always room for that to change in the next few years.
And the next few years is how long we’ll likely need to wait, according to Car and Driver. While there have been reports of people spotting a Gravity prototype being tested over the summer, a real release is quite a long way off.
For fans of EVs, though, this is definitely something to stay tuned for. Electric SUVs are much less developed than electric sedans, meaning that the Gravity could really fill a niche if done right.
If the Air is any indicator, the Gravity is something to get excited about
With so few details to go on, it’s hard to get a clear idea of what to expect from the Lucid Gravity. However, since we know that it will be built on the same platform as the Lucid Air, we can guess that the Gravity will be pretty darn impressive.
With a top speed of 168 mph, the Air packs a powerful punch. There are three models to choose from, and even the least powerful still makes 650 hp. This electric sedan also has an air suspension, which, according to Lucid Motors, provides an incredibly smooth ride.
The thoughtful design of the Air also bodes well for the Gravity. A true luxury sedan, the Air features a glass roof and a cabin filled with premium materials and features. The gauge cluster is entirely digital, and the infotainment system features voice recognition software that is designed to understand natural speech patterns, Car and Driver reports. In addition, a futuristic artificial assistant learns your temperature and music preferences in order to make your driving experience more comfortable.
The Air is also spacious, with roomy seats in the front and rear. Its front trunk measures 10 cubic feet — more than any other EV currently on the market.
If the sedan has this much spaciousness, tech, and design prowess, we can only hope that the Lucid Gravity will be even more impressive. While there are still a few years to go before we can expect to see this electric SUV on the road, it’s something EV drivers will definitely want to keep an eye out for.
