The Manhart MH4 GTR Sends the 2020 BMW M4 off With Hellcat-Level Power
The M4 is getting a hefty update for 2021; BMW’s also giving it a whole catalog of performance parts. But before the coupe gets its new (functional) grille, it’s getting some love from German tuner Manhart Performance. It’s called the MH4 GTR, and it has enough power to rival the Dodge Charger Hellcat.
The Manhart MH4 GTR is a BMW M4 throwback
The Manhart MH4 GTR is based on the 2020 BMW M4, but its looks are inspired by a slightly older model, HiConsumption reports. Specifically, the 2016 BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition created to celebrate DTM driver championship wins.
The BMW M4 DTM Championship Edition is based on the M4 GTS, Car and Driver reports. So underneath the M livery, it has a water-injected 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine, rated at 493 hp and 443 lb-ft. It also has a carbon-fiber roof, hood, rear diffuser, driveshaft, and instrument panel surround, as well as a titanium exhaust, Motor Trend reports. Though instead of the GTS’ orange roll cage, the DTM Edition has a white one.
However, the Manhart MH4 GTR doesn’t just ape the BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition’s looks, Automobile reports. And it has significantly more than 493 hp.
Under the hood, the Manhart MH4 GTR also has a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine. However, it features a remapped ECU, an upgraded intercooler, a new carbon-fiber intake, aluminum hoses, a cat-less stainless-steel performance exhaust, and upgraded turbos. As a result, it now makes 698 hp (708 metric hp) and 723 lb-ft.
Manhart hasn’t released the MH4 GTR’s 0-60 time. But the stock BMW M4 GTS can go 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, Automobile reports. Presumably, the MH4 GTR is noticeably quicker.
What else does the Manhart MH4 GTR offer besides the horsepower?
The Manhart MH4 GTR isn’t solely about the engine. For one, the tuner also strengthened the 7-speed dual-clutch to cope with the extra power. It also rides on matte-black 20” Concave One wheels wrapped in wider-than-stock Michelin Cup 2 performance tires.
Interestingly, the Manhart MH4 GTR retains the BMW M4’s stock brakes and adaptive suspension. However, like the GTS and DTM Editions, it has a carbon-fiber hood, front splitter, rear spoiler, rear wing, mirror caps, and rear diffuser. The mirror caps and spoiler are actually straight from the M Performance catalog, BMW Blog reports. The M-inspired looks, though, are courtesy of Manhart’s own vinyl wrap.
The MH4 GTR doesn’t have a roll cage. But it does have leather-upholstered Recaro sport seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, and an Alcantara-wrapped M Performance steering wheel. Plus, that performance exhaust has active valves that can be opened with the press of a button.
It’s for sale
The BMW M4 GTS and DTM Championship Edition aren’t exactly common. The automaker sold just 300 examples of the former in the US, Road & Track reports. Only 200 examples of the latter were sold, but never in the US.
However, the Manhart MH4 GTR is rarer than either of those two. There’s only one in existence—but it is for sale. Though admittedly, with a roughly $217,300 asking price, it’s more expensive than either the M4 GTS or the 2021 M4. The latter starts at $71,800. It ‘only’ has 473 hp, but it does have a manual.
