The Mazda CX-5 Thinks Grey Is the New Black
Generally, Mazda focuses on trying to stand out from the crowds with unique features instead of following the pack. You could call Mazda the black sheep of the automobile family, but it’s actually the grey on instead as Mazda releases the Carbon Edition paint for the CX-5, CX-9, and Mazda6 instead of doing some type of black on black shade.
The Mazda Carbon Edition
Recently, a variety of trucks and SUVs have gone all black. The Kia Telluride has the night fall, the Toyota Tacoma has the nightshade, and the RAM 1500 has the black edition. So, instead of going black, Mazda chose a special shade of Carbon Grey for one of their special shades of paint. Also, the Carbon grey will contrast against red upholstery.
The Mazda Carbon Grey finish is exclusive to the 2021 Mazda6, Mazda CX-5, and Mazda CX-9. The polymetal grey exterior hue will be paired with blackout wheels and a few black accents inside the interior.
But unfortunately, that’s about all we know. Mazda hasn’t released any more information about their 2021 lineup yet. We also don’t know what price the Mazda Carbon Editions will fetch. However, the Carbo Editions do come with luxurious features.
They will include rear-cross traffic alert, blind-spot warning, heated seats, and a premium Bose audio system that can connect to Apple CarPlay and Android auto. These features sound like ones that are often found on mid-level trim options. Also, these vehicles will be offered in a Jet Black Mica shade, for those who need black.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good SUV?
If you don’t want to wait until 2021 for your Mazda CX-5, though check out the 2020 model. It’s pretty darn nice. However, it starts around $25k, making it a little expensive for families and younger drivers.
Its fuel economy is more than decent with the ability to get up to 25 mpg in the city and up to 31 mpg on the highway. You might have to consider a hybrid option to find better mileage. Edmunds enjoyed the Mazda CX-5 for its enjoyable ride, handling, and upscale interior too.
However, the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder base engine is a bit slow for the price, despite pumping out 182 horsepower. Be sure to consider upgrading to the 2.5-liter turbo-charged four-cylinder for 250 hp.
With this engine, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Also, all-wheel-drive comes standard with all models that come with the more powerful engine, making it more of a bargain.
2020 Mazda CX-5 Features
The front seats of the Mazda CX-5 are large and spacious, perfect for taller drivers and one passenger. However, the back seat is reported as being cramped compared to rivals. Leg room and space for someone to sit in the middle is limited.
Also, the tech features seem fine. There’s nothing too special, but the Mazda CX-5 can connect to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But the 8” display is only available on the higher trim options.
