It’s been almost a decade since Mazda sunsetted the CX-7, but it’s still alive and well in the used-car market. The CX-7 is one of the more affordable crossover SUVs to buy used, and it is fairly dependable. What do CX-7 owners still love about this Mazda?

There’s also a more potent option that critics and buyers have loved. The CX-7’s available turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder generates 244-hp. This turbo-four comes with a six-speed automatic. Although, the extra oomph does sacrifice fuel economy by a few points. Some critics also critiqued the CX-7’s more powerful engine because of its turbo lag, which can get annoying.

The CX-7 boasts Mazda’s sleek style on the outside, and its cabin is appealing too. Back when it was new, critics were particularly impressed by the CX-7’s supportive seats. This SUV can carry up to five people, but some reviewers noted that taller passengers might feel cramped because of the CX-7’s lower roofline. 

“The CX-7’s athletic styling carries over to the interior of the cabin, where the edgy yet functional design provides a more visually interesting environment than one might expect from a crossover SUV. A sporty three-spoke steering wheel with audio controls is reminiscent of the one found in the Miata, while the gauge cluster is similar to the RX-8’s. Build quality and ergonomics are both very good, although some might find the radio controls a bit complicated compared to other vehicles. “

Mazda initially offered features like a navigation system and a touchscreen display for the SUV. Some owners have made their models more modern with aftermarket infotainment systems that have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. We’ve also seen some owners upgrade their CX-7s with fancier leather surfaces. 

Is the Mazda CX-7 coming back?

No, the CX-7 isn’t coming back. The good news is that you can still shop for a used model if you’d like. The average price for a 2012 Mazda CX-7 ranges between $7,000 and $9,575, so it’s not a bad buy if you want something cheap and dependable. 

For CX-7 performance in a more modern and efficient package, you’ll want to consider getting a Mazda CX-5 or a CX-9. Both models have strong reliability ratings and Mazda’s trademark sportiness. Like the CX-7, the CX-5 can carry five. The CX-7 can carry up to seven.
