The Most American Made Truck

Which truck is the most American made? Is it a Chevy? Is it the Ram 1500? It’s the Honda Ridgeline. What? Honda is a Japanese company, so how can this be true? Because the Honda Ridgeline is manufactured in Alabama.

You’ll find that Honda hires tons of Americans to work in factories across the nation, as two-thirds of the vehicles they sell are manufactured in America. That’s more than the industrial average, which is having a little over half of the vehicles sold made in America.

We got to these numbers with the American made index that judged vehicles based on:

  • Final assembly location
  • Origin of vehicle parts
  • The origin-country/countries for engines
  • The origin-country/countries for transmissions
  • The number of Americans hired at the factory level

The Chevy Colorado is American Made

Next up on the list for the most American made truck is the Chevy Colorado. Chevrolet is a part of General Motors, so that’s a nice win for an American company. While parts of the Chevy Colorado are made in Brazil and Thailand, assembly also occurs in Missouri and Louisiana.

The Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra are also American made. While there are assembly plants in Canada and Mexico, there are also assembly plants in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. Those areas are more traditional for auto manufacturing than states in the South.

Jeep is the Most American Made Vehicle

We know, we veered off course and got stuck on a quick Jeep tangent. While this article is about trucks, Jeeps are sort of related. Either way, the Jeep Wrangler is the most American Made vehicle. 74% of Jeep Wrangler parts are manufactured in American. The second most American made vehicle is the Jeep Cherokee, and 70% of its components are manufactured in the United States.

To tie things back into trucks, the Jeep Gladiator is also assembled in America. The main Jeep factory is in Toledo, Ohio, where Jeeps have been made since 1948. Jeep also has plants in Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.

Where is the Ford F-150 Made?

The Ford F-150 is built in Michigan and Missouri, but it’s also manufactured in Mexico, Vietnam, and Malaysia. On the list of the most American made cars, the Ford F-150 is number 13 on the list.

The Ford F-150 has more internal parts built in other countries, which is why it ranks so low on the list. It’s assembled in America, and Ford does provide a variety of jobs for assembly and sales. Just not as many as the Honda Ridgeline does.

Setting cars and SUVs aside, according to this 2019 study, the Ford F-150 is the 4th most American made truck. The Chevy Colorado ranks in 8th place for the most American made vehicle and 2nd for the most American made truck.
