Jeeps are considered true American cars. They were first developed for soldiers during WWII, who got a taste of its power and off-roading capabilities. The first civilian Jeep was produced in 1945. It is still one of most popular and affordable SUVs on the market today.

Currently, the most expensive Jeep is the newest Gladiator, with a $33,000 price tag for its base trim. However, other Jeeps have cost much more. The most famous one, the Hurricane, retailed for millions. Here are some of the most expensive Jeeps ever made.

Jeep Hurricane

The Hurricane was supposed to be the most powerful Jeep in the lineup. Made of one large piece of carbon fiber, the lightweight body allowed it to go faster than many other vehicles in its class. With twin V8 5.7-liter HEMI engines capable of 670 hp and 740 lb-ft of torque, the Hurricane could accelerate from 0 to 60 in a little under five seconds. It was advertised with a top speed of 250 miles per hour.

The Hurricane’s most unique feature was its drivetrain, which allowed the car to move sideways by turning all four wheels in the same direction. Unfortunately, the Hurricane never made it past the concept phase.

Because of its lack of both side doors and a roof, safety was a concern, especially for offroading. The company also deemed it too expensive for mass reproduction due to its special drivetrain. If it were released, however, the Jeep Hurricane would cost a whopping $2 million.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited

Only produced in 1998, this car was a more powerful, rare version of the standard Limited offered at the time. It was powered by a V8 5.9-liter engine capable of 245 hp and 345 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle could accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in seven seconds.

This may not seem impressive by today’s standards, but the 5.9 Limited was considered the fastest SUV in the late ’90s. It was also made with more luxury components, including woodgrain accents, leather seats, and five-star wheels. Less than 15,000 were ever made; each retailed for $50,000.

2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8

Like the Hurricane, this Jeep got a powerful V8 HEMI engine, capable of producing 465 hp. It had a maximum reported speed of 155 miles per hour, with an acceleration rate of 0 to 60 in five seconds.

Unlike most Jeeps, it wasn’t marketed for its off-roading power, but it was still fun to drive due to improved stability control and rear differential. The interior was made of more luxury materials than its competitors. Retailing for $120,000, it also had more infotainment features than other Jeeps at the time.

2013 Grand Cherokee SRT-WK2

This Jeep featured all the luxury interior materials you would expect from an expensive sports car. The cabin had woodgrain accents, leather seats, polished chrome, and a sophisticated technology package that offered a wide array of driver’s assistance features. It had a V8 6.4-liter engine capable of 468 hp and a maximum speed of 160 miles per hour.

In addition to its upscale interior and engine, the SRT-WK2 excelled in off-roading. It earned more awards for exceptional performance and safety than any SUV. It retailed for a well-deserved price of $130,000.
