If you were hoping a new model, or one you might not suspect would be the most popular used car of 2021, move along. Instead, try to guess the top three best-selling used models, and you’ll probably be correct. Although car sales as a whole have been down for a few years, the same models remain the most popular. The single best-seller is no stranger to sitting on the top of the leaderboards.

If you’ve been paying attention at all, you know that America loves pickup trucks. The two go hand-in-hand, and it’s been that way for a long time. Not only is the most popular used car of 2021 a truck, so are the second and third most popular models. Not to mention, they make up a more significant percentage of sales than every other model on the list by far.

Outside of the top three, a solid mixture of SUVs and sedans make up the top 10. Although, the models on the list are just as predictable as the winner. Sedans like the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic have been some of the most popular options for a long time. According to Motor1, that should come as a surprise to no one.

What a surprise, the Ford F-150 was the most popular used car of 2021. It’s been the best-selling pickup truck in America for over 40 years, so what else is new? However, it was followed up by its competition, making the top three all pickups. Chevy and Ram have become much more competitive recently, even beating out Ford in new sales in some yearly quarters.

Pickup trucks continue to be some of the most popular models in America. Modern trucks are also costly, so buyers finding used ones to fit their budget is a smart move. Especially in the current market, where everything is overpriced, you don’t want to get stuck paying too much for a new truck.

How much of the used car market did the Ford F-150 cover?

According to Motor1, the iconic Ford F-150 made up 3.6% of the used car sales for 2021. While it may not sound like much, the following model is the Chevy Silverado 1500, a whopping 1% behind. The Silverado and Ram 1500 trucks made up 2.6% and 2.4% of the used car market, respectively. Ford’s offering leads the pack by so much, but other models fall far behind the pickups.

Following the trio of trucks, the percentage continues to fall, with the closest one being the Honda Civic at 2.0%. Amazingly, the following six models are so close in sales that Honda Accord only falls to 1.6% in the tenth place. The total percentage of used car sales was astoundingly close in 2021, other than the dominant top three.

As you can see, pickup trucks, compact SUVs, and sedans dominated the used car market in 2021. They’re consistently the most popular vehicles in America. New car lists like these don’t look too much different. Only recently, crossovers and compact SUVs have overtaken pickup trucks for the top sales figures. That’s why the most popular used cars of 2021 won’t, and didn’t surprise you.
