Ford is doing it. Chevrolet is doing it. Now, Ram is promising its own all-electric truck, and it is calling it the Ram BEV, or battery electric vehicle. So far, details are scarce. But Ram is taking a different approach. While Ford and Chevy are making their electric trucks look like, well, trucks, Ram is going the sleek and sporty route and instead sculpting it to look more like a sports car.

The new electric Ram truck concept looks more sport truck than work truck

In the handful of images Ram has released, or shown in the background of videos of its CEO talking, it shows a low-slung, aerodynamic body, with what looks like full LED lighting across the grille and the bed. On the front, white accent parking lights form wishbones pointing to a new Ram logo that is a bit more stylized than the one on the current truck’s grille.

The truck is clearly a four-door crew cab, but the back window seems short and chopped, more like a 1950s hot rod than a 2020s truck. It also has tall, squared-off, fender arches like the Tesla Cybertruck, which hint at giant off-road tire potential. It has tall “shoulders” and a vented hood that give it brand similarity to the mighty TRX. The windshield is also laid back at a sports-car-like angle, giving it a rake that says “speed,” more than “towing capacity.”

While many of us thought the new truck would be called “Revolution,” that name seems to be just the web address for the new Ram enthusiast website. But, the EV in the Revolution name could point to more vehicles from Stellantis.

Ram has not talked about the interior, safety, warranty, or power of the new EV yet. But, it will face some still competition.

Electric trucks are one of the hottest segments, and there are several models to look forward to. You can count the Rivian R1T, the Hummer EV truck, the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, a new GMC Sierra, a possible Toyota EV to join the new electric Ram truck. Then, there are few startup brands that are bringing trucks soon to a street near you, including Canoo and Lordstown trucks, and the Nikola Badger.

But Stellantis, Ram’s parent company, says it is committed to electrifying its fleet, so that means EV trucks and Ram Vans sooner rather than later.  

What Stellantis says about its new EV models

“According to our internal performance index, our Ram 1500 will outperform all competitors on the attributes consumers care about most; range, towing, payload and charge time,” Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares recently said at the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 event. “The competition is fierce, and we are ready to take on the fight for the top spot.”

Stellantis has said the new electric Ram truck will have a 500-mile range, a new fast-charging system, and be able to tow more than 10,000 pounds.

At that event, Tavares said he wants to see 75 BEV nameplates across the company’s 14 brand names by 2030. That means we will likely see electric Citroens and Opels in Europe, as well as Jeeps, Chryslers and Rams in the U.S.

‘Hey, STLA!’ Stellantis’ new EV platform

The new Ram BEV will join a fully-electric Jeep in 2023 and it will use the new skateboard-style platform previewed by Stellantis called the STLA, or “Stella.” STLA platforms come in four sizes, small, medium, large and frame. The new Ram will be built on the body-on-frame STLA.

“At Stellantis, electrification is not a one size fits all proposition. Our global engineering teams are developing vehicle platforms, propulsion and energy storage systems that will enhance the inherent DNA of each of our 14 iconic brands,” the company said.

That means that from the tiny city cars Stellantis makes in Europe to the big Ram trucks and vans, each will have its own platform.
