For a while now, we’ve been hearing rumors about the new Ford compact pickup truck they’re planning to unveil sometime in the next few years. But they’ve always been just rumors. At least, until now.

There appears to be some confirmation to some of those rumors about the small pickup. We don’t have all the answers yet, but the pieces are coming into place, finally. MotorTrend shared what they know about the up-and-coming Ford mystery truck and what we can expect to see with it. 

What truck are we talking about?

Ford has dropped hints for some time now about a unibody compact truck they plan to produce for the American market. While the name is unknown, as of yet, there are a few speculations of what they could call this truck.

One theory has to do with the Brazilian built Courier. The new truck is said to replace it, so maybe it could bring back the Courier name, which we saw in the U.S. in the ’70s with the Mazda B-Series. 

Another theory is that it could fall into the Bronco family of vehicles Ford plans to bring back to the market. The Bronco isn’t slotted to come out until 2021, but a truck offered as a sneak peek into the Bronco line might be in order. As of right now, though, the name remains shrouded in mystery, except for the code name of P758. 

What we know so far about the new Ford truck

We do know that the truck will not take on any styling elements from the car-based Courier coupe utility vehicle that we see sold in the markets from other countries. It seems Ford plans to beef up the styling of this truck with macho elements to appeal to the American market. 

Ford also plans to use their compact car, front-wheel drive platform as the underpinning of the unibody pickup, which could suggest a Ranchero reunion of sorts. This should help it fill in the holes left behind when they started discontinuing the Focus, Fiesta, and what would’ve been the Focus Active hatchback while also reviving their compact truck class. Without sedans in the line-up, Ford would need something on the economic side of things. 

Motor Trend shared a leaked Ford document that mentions there could be two Ford EcoBoost engine options coming for the Courier. One is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder, and the other is a 2.0-liter turbo four, which are also seen with the Escape crossover. 

GM Authority reports that the Courier is said to have flat sides with a boxy shape that’s reminiscent of the Ranger truck with a throwback to the original ’80s design. It’s also said to have some competition from Kia, who’s planning to roll out a small truck of their own. 

What we expect to see with this truck

Because of its smaller stature, the unibody truck should slide right in underneath the Ford Ranger in the line-up. The Ranger conveniently doesn’t offer any two-door versions of itself, so this new pickup slotted to come out in the near future, could very well take up the slack and offer a simple two-door model that’s expected to be affordable, with a price tag around $20,000.

They also feel that a hefty engine, like Ford’s 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged EcoBoost Inline-four motor, will probably be dropped under the hood, since there appears to be a dual exhaust system on a test vehicle spied out by others. 

The new Courier, or whatever they’ll call it when it finally makes its debut, will generate plenty of interest for this mysterious pickup truck. How well will it stand against some of the other smaller trucks on the market?
