The New GMC Hummer EV is Underpowered and Overpriced
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV had a shocking debut. Once we heard how much the Hummer EV will cost, our jaws dropped. To make matters more surprising, the GMC Hummer EV doesn’t seem to incorporate enough power and features to make the price worth it.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is overpriced
Surprise! The 2022 GMC Hummer EV has a giant price tag. The base model starts around $80,000. The base model that will be available in the spring of 2024 will have 250+ miles of range and 625 hp.
The Hummer EV 2x will be available in the spring of 2023, with a price of about $89,995. It will have 300+ miles of range and 625 hp. This model will also include the 4 Wheel Steer and CrabWalk features.
The Hummer EV 3x will be available in the fall of 2022 for about $99,995. It will have a 300+ mile range and 800 hp. It will include the Three-mote drive system, torque vectoring, and watts to Freedom.
Meanwhile, you can save almost $50,000 with the Tesla Cybertruck, which will start around $40,000. The Tesla Cybertruck Tri-Motor AWD is the highest trim level, and it starts around $69,900. This is $1k less than the Hummer EV’s base model trim that won’t be available for a few years.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is underpowered
Were you shocked when you heard that the GMC Hummer EV will have 1,000 hp? Well, that shouldn’t have been a surprise, because the Tesla Cybertruck has 800 hp already. The Tesla Cybertruck will also have an estimated 1,000 lb-ft of torque.
The Hummer EV brags about having 11,500 lb-ft of torque, but they have marketed this feature in a tricky way. According to CNET, that inflated number is most likely the axle torque, which is a much higher number than the SAE-certified spec that the auto industry commonly uses.
According to Motor1, who did the math, the GMC Hummer will have about 800 hp, which is pretty beefy. GMC will probably release the actual specs closer to when the Hummer EV becomes available. Also, the Tesla Cyber Truck has 1,000 lb-ft of torque.
The 2022 Hummer EV will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 3 seconds, which is behind the Tesla Cyber Truck again. The Tesla Cyber Truck boasts the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds.
Also, the Hummer EV hasn’t released it’s towing specs yet. We hope it can bring the heat because the Tesla Cybertruck can tow up to 14,000 lb and carry a payload of 3,500 lb. The Electric Ford F-150 is expected to tow over 13,000 lb too.
2022 GMC Hummer EV Range
To our surprise, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV doesn’t have an impressive range. It will only have a ranger of about 350 miles. Meanwhile, the Tesla Cyber Truck has an estimated range of 500 miles. The Rivian R1T has a 400-mile range too.
The battery pack in the Hummer EV can apparently connect to an 800-volt charging system to give the truck 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. However, the charging times for home and at fast-charging DC stations haven’t been released.
