The Ram 1500 is one of the most popular trucks in America, and for a good reason. Not only is the Ram 1500 a great pickup truck when it comes to doing pickup truck things, but Ram also offers a lot of options on it. And soon, Ram will introduce a new Special Edition for the Ram 1500 that’s exclusive to just four U.S. states.

The Ram 1500 Southwest Edition

As Car and Drive reported, Ram will be introducing a brand-new Special Edition trim for the Ram 1500 called the Southwest Edition. As its name implies, it’s a Ram 1500 that’s designed to honor the Southwest, and as such, it will only be available in the Southwest. While there is some disagreement on which states are apart of the Southwest, to Ram, the Southwest is just four states. 

Those four states are, according to Car and Driver, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Car and Driver says that this trim will be coming soon to dealerships sometime in the second quarter of the year. This means that, unless something goes wrong, the Ram 1500 Southwest Edition will be available for purchase sometime between April 1st and June 30th. 

What the Ram 1500 Southwest Edition has

While it’s a tribute to the Southwestern states that it gets its name from, it’s not very clear how exactly it honors those states. That said, Car and Driver report that the Southwest Edition is actually based largely on the Laramie Sport package that’s currently available for the Ram 1500.

The Southwest Edition will come with a single-color paint job that includes body-color bumpers, according to Car and Driver. There are some chrome accents on the Southwest Edition as well as standard 20-inch wheels. However, what does set the Southwest Edition apart, asides from the fact that it’s only available in four states, is the standard equipment that it has.

MotorTrend says that, along with a Texas-sized 12-inch touch screen infotainment system, the Southwest Edition also comes with a lot of smart safety features that are typically options for a pickup truck.

These safety features include a blind spot monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors with automatic stop, automatic high-beam headlights, smart rain-sensing windshield wipers, remote tailgate release capability, and a cross-path detection system. Another smart feature that isn’t usually considered a safety feature that the Southwest Edition has is an electronic trailer brake control system that’ll help make towing something safer.

The Ram 1500’s interior is already one of the best interiors in the industry, and the Southwest Edition improves it even more. Powered side-steps are also standard and the Southwest Edition, as is a panoramic sunroof. MotorTrend also says that there’s an option to add a heavy-duty locking console to the Southwest Edition if you choose to swap the bench for bucket seats.

How capable is the Ram 1500 Southwest Edition?

As Car and Driver said, all the options and configurations as far as truck beds, cabs, and engines go that are available on the Laramie are also available on the Southwest Edition. What that means is that, essentially, the Southwest Edition is as capable as the Laramie trim is.

As such, there’s a choice between a 3.6-liter V6, a 5.7-liter V8, or a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine. A 5-foot 7-inch truck bed is available on the Crew Cab only, while a 6-foot 4-inch truck bed is available on both the Crew Cab and the Quad Cab configurations. 

So, if you’re in Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, or Texas and you want to buy a brand-new, relatively exclusive truck, the Ram 1500 Southwest Edition will cost about $47,000 in total.
