The Ram 1500 G/T Is Not a Trim Level, but It Should Be
Have you noticed a mysterious new badge on recent Rams? The Ram 1500 G/T is all-new for the 2022 model year. This truck is not its own trim level; the G/T is a performance package available on both the Ram Laramie and Rebel trims. But I, for one, am hoping the G/T gets its own trim level and becomes the gnarly Ram street muscle-truck we deserve.
The Ram 1500 G/T package includes:
- Cold air intake
- Performance exhaust system
- Floor console shifter
- Paddle shifters
- Ram’s “Performance pages” real-time engine stats
- 3.92 rear axle ratio (if not already equipped)
- Sport performance hood (if not already equipped)
- Leather-wrapped shift lever
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel
- Bright aluminum pedals
- G/T themed interior
- G/T exterior decals
The 2022 Ram 1500 Laramie G/T is a speed machine
The 2022 Ram 1500 Laramie starts at $48,250. It is the first trim level of the truck with several luxury features. Every Laramie has the largest four-door “crew” cab. This trim also comes with an 8-inch touchscreen loaded with Uconnect, a 7-inch digital driver’s cluster, a nine-speaker Alpine system, and leather-trimmed heated/ventilated front seats. The Laramie even comes with automatic braking and parking assist.
The G/T package, starting at $2,995, transforms the Laramie into a real speed demon. You get a sport hood and floor-mounted column shifter for the automatic transmission. Both of these features are inspired by the flagship Ram, the 1500 TRX.
In addition, the Laramie G/T comes with a chrome delete “sport look” and G/T badging. The resulting truck may not be an SRT product, but it sure has a muscle truck look, reminiscent of the legendary Ram SRT10.
The Laramie G/T isn’t all bark either: a cold air intake and performance exhaust system help its 5.7L HEMI V8 breathe. Ram’s “Performance Pages” engine data in the infotainment system and paddle shifters put you, the driver, in precise control of the truck.
The 2022 Ram 1500 Rebel G/T is an off-road racer
Don’t dare dismiss the $49,495 Ram 1500 Rebel as a “poor man’s TRX.” To be blunt, the Ram TRX‘s 700+ horsepower supercharged V8 is overkill for most off-roading.
The Rebel, on the other hand, can sip gas and stay out on the trails all day. You can even get this factory-lifted truck with a diesel engine. That’s cool enough to make a TRX driver do a double-take.
When you add the G/T package to your Rebel, you end up with a truck even closer to the SRT-tuned TRX. You get a two-tone interior with bright pedals and G/T badging. You also get improved shifter options (both TRX style center console and paddles) and engine upgrades.
Please make the Ram 1500 G/T a 2023 trim level!
I’ll be blunt: I think all the Rebel G/T bits and bobs should be included on the standard Ram 1500 Rebel. How can you sell an off-road performance truck without including your “performance pages” app in its infotainment system?
But the Ram Laramie G/T is underrated and deserves its own trim.
The G/T badge stands for “Grand Tourer.” Dodge/MOPAR has long used it to distinguish well-appointed vehicles with performance-oriented engines.
With the SRT division focused on the desert racing Ram 1500 TRX project, Ram does not offer any street racing themed pickup trucks. And that’s a shame.
If Dodge still ran Ram trucks, we’d have at least one street-racing muscle truck. A lowered and tuned Ram 1500 G/T trim could be that truck. And it would fill out the Ram lineup nicely.
I’d like to remind Ram that your fourth-gen 1500 often had ten separate trim levels. Surely we have room for a Ram 1500 G/T in next year’s Ram lineup! You know you want to build it. And you know we would buy it. So please, for the love of speed, make the Ram 1500 G/T a reality.
