It is a surprise to absolutely no one that the folks that gave us the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and the Durango SRT Hellcat also decided to build an extremely powerful pickup truck. With 702-hp on tap, the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is the world’s most powerful production pickup truck. MotorTrend recently announced that the TRX is also the quickest truck they’ve ever tested across their various performance benchmarks.

The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX reached 60 mph in 4.1 seconds

The best part of having independent testing is that we get to see if the Ram 1500 TRX actually meets its claimed performance figures in the real world. According to Ram, the TRX reaches 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, or about the same as a Ford Focus RS. However, real-world testing revealed the TRX is even quicker. During MotorTrend’s testing, the TRX reached 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. According to MotorTrend, the V10-powered Dodge Ram SRT-10 managed to reach 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

The Ram 1500 TRX reached the quarter-mile in 12.7 seconds at 106.3 mph. Like with the 0-60 mph time, real-world tests reveal the TRX is quicker than Ram’s claimed 12.9-second quarter-mile time. To put this into perspective, that’s about the same as a 2015 Mercedes AMG C63 S. Keep in mind; the TRX weighs roughly 6,350 lbs. The aforementioned SRT-10 managed to complete the quarter-mile in 13.2 seconds at 107.1 mph.

How do its competitors stack up?

Thanks to MotorTrend’s extensive catalog of new vehicle tests, we can see how some of the Ram 1500 TRX’s competitors stack up. Let’s start with the truck being formally dethroned by the TRX. According to MotorTrend, the fastest truck they had tested before the TRX was a 2008 Toyota Tundra TRD Supercharged. The optional supercharged allowed the Tundra to reach 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The quarter-mile was reached 13 seconds at 106.3 miles per hour.

Its current and most direct competitor is the Ford Raptor. Both the Ram 1500 TRX and the Raptor offer powerful engines and tremendous off-road capabilities. It is important to note that the Raptor is down about 250-hp but is about 800 lb lighter. During MotorTrend’s test, the Raptor managed to reach 60 mph in 6.0 seconds and complete the quarter-mile in 14.7 seconds.

Thankfully, Ford seems to be cooking up their own beefed-up version of the Raptor if rumors are believed. If we’re lucky, we may get an epic battle between two overpowered super trucks sometime soon.

What else can the TRX do?

While 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times are certainly fun to measure and compare, the Ram 1500 TRX was designed with an entirely different purpose in mind. As the embargo for first-drive reviews lifted, YouTube became inundated with clips of the TRX soaring through the sky.

That’s because, according to Motor1, the Ram 1500 TRX features a chassis that is 74 percent different from a standard Rebel. The chassis overall has been stiffened up to handle flex while off-roading. Add on to that specialized Bilstein Blackhawk active shocks, and you get a pickup truck that can confidently handle off-road jumps.

Since the TRX will most likely be someone’s daily driver, Ram has included various driving modes that delay the throttle response and slightly de-tune the engine for a more comfortable ride. During Motor1’s first-drive review, the TRX excelled both with off-road savagery and on-road refinement. Regardless of which side of the TRX you’re looking at, they’re all pretty much just as impressive.
