The Ram Pickup Truck Still Can’t Keep up With the Ford F-Series
When it comes to sales, it’s no secret that the Ford F-Series is a winner year after year. 2019 and especially crazy 2020, however, have shown that other brands like GM and Ram Trucks are gunning to overtake the reigning champion of pickup truck sales––Ford. But a look at the sales numbers for this year on Good Car Bad Car shows us that the Ram pickup truck still can’t keep up with the Ford F-Series.
Are Ram trucks good?
Falling behind Ford doesn’t have much to do with the quality of Ram Trucks pickups. In fact, sources like MotorTrend and Car and Driver love what Ram has done with its pickup truck line. The Ram pickup truck won the MotorTrend 2020 Truck of the Year award following a 2019 win of the same award. Reviewers at Car and Driver write that the Ram pickup truck is “the best truck you can buy today.”
So, yes. It’s safe to say that the Ram pickup truck is a great truck. So why is Ford still dominating when it comes to sales? Let’s take a look at the 2020 pickup truck sales numbers for the third quarter.
Pickup truck sales
According to the pickup truck sales data on Good Car Bad Car, pickup trucks are absolutely crushing it. But Ford remains ahead of other trucks including Ram, Chevrolet, and GMC. According to the third quarter numbers posted on GCBC, the Ford F-Series is way out front for 2020 pickup truck sales.
Year to date sales of Ford F-Series models for the third quarter is 221,647 models sold. Last year in 2019, the F-Series reported 214,176 new units sold at that point in the financial season. So for 2020 the Ford F-Series has seen a 3.5% growth in sales since last year at the same time.
The Ram Trucks numbers are different. Last year, there were 161,635 new Ram pickup truck models sold. In 2020, however, quarter three sales data shows 156,156 new Ram pickup trucks sold. That means that while the Ford F-Series saw 3.5% growth for 2020 pickup truck sales Ram Trucks saw a 3.4% drop in sales growth. When you compare this year to last year, the Ford F-Series is the only pickup truck that saw actual year to year growth in 2020––besides the GMC Sierra.
Ram pickup trucks come in second place
In terms of sales, new Ram pickup trucks are showing sales number in second place to the formidable Ford F-Series. They may not have grown sales number year to year for the third quarter. But Ram trucks still holds the second place spot.
However, Ford’s lead is massive. In fact, it’s not by much less than 100,000 units that Ram is behind Ford. Overall, the Ford F-Series is still dominating the truck market. Despite all the praise and awards received by critics, Ram pickup trucks still can’t keep up with the Ford F-Series in terms of 2020 pickup truck sales.
The year’s not over
With the holidays on the horizon and a huge time of the season for auto sales, there’s no telling what might happen. In an industry as dynamic as this one, it’s nearly impossible to predict the outcome of things like this. Will Ram overturn the Ford king? We don’t know. But we do know that it will have to catch up with some massive sales number in quarter four if there’s any chance of dethroning the legendary F-Series.
