When it was first announced that the Hellcat-engine Ram Rebel TRX would reach production, the first question on everyone’s mind was if it would get the full 707 hp. In its original concept form, the Rebel TRX only made 575 hp. And in a time when Roush is boosting F-150s to over 600 hp, Brabus has an 800-hp G-Wagon truck, and Hennessey has a 1000-hp Gladiator, the Ram risked being out-gunned.

But now, an inside source reports that there’s no need to rush and jam a Hellcat engine into a standard Ram 1500. That’s because the Ram Rebel TRX will indeed be making over 700 hp. And that’s not all we’ve learned.

The Ram Rebel TRX’s horsepower

The news comes courtesy of Allpar, which spoke with “several people in the automotive industry who have worked on the Ram TRX program.”

The first thing confirmed was that the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 in the Ram Rebel TRX would be making at least 700 hp. An exact number wasn’t quoted, but even 99% of 707 hp is a lot of power.

Allpar’s sources also report the power will be routed through an 8-speed automatic, linked to a strengthened four-wheel drive system. The truck will also allegedly offer a trailering package, with an integrated trailer brake controller.

This is in some contrast to information Motor1 reported a few months ago, discussing TRX prototypes equipped with 10-speed automatics. It’s possible, though, that Ram couldn’t achieve the necessary durability with a 10-speed, and switched to an 8-speed. However, the ‘strengthened 4WD’ does match what Car and Driver spotted in March 2019. Spy photographers captured a Rebel equipped with a “seriously beefy trailing arm and mount,” as well as internal-bypass shocks.

Car and Driver’s spy shots showed a fairly sedate-looking Ram Rebel. However, Allpar’s sources indicate that won’t be the case with the production pickup.

Other new Ram Rebel TRX details

In terms of overall appearance, Allpar’s sources claim the production Ram Rebel TRX will “will stay true to the concept.” In fact, FCA sort of teased the production truck already, in its “Drive for Design” program’s promo poster. So, expect the production Rebel TRX to feature at least a vented hood with wide fender flares. However, features like the beadlock wheels and bed-mounted spare are likely to be optional extras.

The Ram Rebel TRX’s interior will also be heavily-equipped, sources claim. The truck will come with a 12” touchscreen infotainment system, as well as a high-end audio system and multiple external cameras. It’s not known, though, if Ram will copy Toyota and Land Rover and use the cameras as obstacle spotters.

What we still don’t know

Unfortunately, we still don’t know when the Ram Rebel TRX is expected to officially break cover. Prototypes have been spotted driving around the Michigan dunes, but no firm production date has been revealed.

There’s already another hotly-anticipated Hellcat product on the horizon, the Dodge Durango Hellcat. That will be a 2021 model and was expected to debut at the 2020 New York Auto Show. But, as Roadshow reports, with the show being delayed due to the spread of coronavirus, Dodge’s and Ram’s schedules have likely been thrown out of whack.

Allpar’s sources also didn’t share what the Ram Rebel TRX will cost. The current Rebel starts at $49,490. Scaled roughly with the Durango Hellcat’s estimated price, that would put the Rebel TRX at $65,000-$70,000.

That’s about $15,000 more than the Ford F-150 Raptor, which makes about 250 less horsepower. The Roush F-150 Nitemare is also $15k-cheaper, and down only 50 hp, but it’s not meant for off-roading.

The closest competition would be the 700-hp Hennessey Goliath 700, built on a Chevrolet Silverado with a 6.2-liter V8. The cheapest such Silverado is the Custom Trail Boss, at $46,365. With the $26,995 package, that works out to $73,360.
