The Raptor R and Ram TRX Both Have Drinking Problems. Which Is Worse?
It will take a Toyota Prius or two to offset the new Ford F-150 Raptor R and Ram 1500 TRX gas mileage figures. The EPA has rated both new supercharged 700-horsepower V8 supertrucks at just 10 mpg in the city. Those mileage numbers seem to be from the 1970s, but they’re here, today, on modern trucks. What makes these beasts so thirsty for 92 octane?
What is the Ford Raptor R mpg rating?
The EPA now says the F-150 Raptor R gets a dismal 10 mpg in the city, and 15 mpg on the highway. We’re not surprised. The truck has 700 horsepower, and it weights about 6,000 pounds so can you really expect less? Also, it take a lot of ponies to roll those giant 37-inch BF Goodrich All-terrain tires.
But we all know: If you’re buying a Raptor R, the last thing on your mind is MPG figures. Instead, you want all the off-road and go-fast goodies you can get. This could be, after all, one of the last great gas-powered trucks of all time, so why not spend $100 per fill up to have a good time in the dirt? How does it compare to a TRX?
Is it better than the Ram 1500 TRX mpg rating?
The Ram 1500 TRX is a 6,800-pound supertruck that has, in its case, 702 horsepower from a giant turbocharged V8. It’s no surprise, however, that the TRX nearly matches the Raptor’s fuel economy figures from the EPA. The TRX, too, earns 10 mpg in the city, but it is rated at 14 mpg on the highway. But, it could be worse than that because the lead foots over at Car and Driver reported just 9 mpg during its test of the TRX.
What “regular” truck gets the worst MPG?
According to the EPA The Chevy Silverado ZR2 gets the worst mileage for a pickup. But, do you see a trend here? The ZR2, like the Raptor and the TRX is an off-road beast that can romp with the best of them. The ZR2 has special shocks, and Chevy’s mighty 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 horsepower, without a blower. It is rated at 17 mpg on the highway which, we suppose, is better, when compared to a Raptor R or a TRX.
What is the Raptor R price?
Ford says that the new Raptor R will be available for order in the fall of 2022. We know, fall of 2022 is here, and there is no order option yet. But, the base price is a staggering $110,000 for the Raptor R. It may cost more than a house (ok a condo), but it comes with every option that Ford can toss at it, including a set of Recaro bucket seats in the front to keep you planted when you’re out-dragging a ‘Vette or playing in the dunes with that monster V8.
