The Shelby Baja Raptor Was Built to Dominate Desert Terrain
Wow, just wow. Every once in a while, we find stats on a truck that leaves us speechless. The Shelby Baja Raptor has us, and reviewers, in awe with its impressive power and off-road capability. We thought we’d share what about this truck has everyone impressed. It’s obvious this beast was built to dominate the desert terrain. Can you guess how dominating it would be on your wallet?
An off-road labor of love
Most vehicles are designed with the intention of creating variable options to accommodate different work and lifestyle needs. The Shelby Baja Raptor, however, was built to serve one purpose — to dominate the desert terrain.
This isn’t a vehicle designed for fuel-efficiency or comfort on long highway drives. It was made for and goes unmatched in mastering sand and rugged terrain. Launched in 2018, Shelby took the already powerful F-150 Raptor and beefed it up even more.
How many horses does it take for the Baja Raptor to roar?
Shelby took the original Raptor’s 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 to a new level. It’s also available with a 5.0L V8. They upgraded it with a high-flow air filter, cold air intake, aluminum intercooler, and an ECU tune.
The Shelby Baja Raptor offers a staggering 525-hp and 610 lb.-ft of torque. Paired with the ten-speed automatic transmission, and it’s hard to imagine what this truck can’t do.
For the ride, the original Fox Racing shocks on the Raptor were replaced with three-inch coilover bypass internal and external units. Enthusiasts will appreciate the heat diffuser fins and undercoating for protection off-road. Off-roaders won’t have to use tools to adjust setting anymore either. The Baja Raptor offers a turn knob on the reservoir.
Looks and all the feels
The Baja Raptor wouldn’t be a Shelby original without unique design and trademark feels. Expect steel bumpers and a specially designed dual intake ram air hood.
You’ll have two spares in case you need to replace one of your BF Goodrich KO2 tires, currently mounted on your Shelby alloy Raptor wheels. The Baja has stripes and badging, famous for Shelby design. One review likened the LED lighting to that of football stadium lighting.
Inside you’ll have the branded floor mats in case you forget what you’re sitting in. You’ll also have carbon fiber accents, leather everything, and cool dash plaque complete with a designated Shelby number.
What’s new for the 2020 Baja Raptor?
We’re not sure how much of the Baja Raptor was improvable, but Shelby claims to have enhanced this monster for 2020. Consumers can expect a stronger and lighter platform, with enhancements to suspension, and additional styling options. As in previous years, only select authorized dealers in the U.S. and Canada will have the Shelby Baja Raptor.
How much for this off-road master?
For a 2019 base price, expect to shell out $93,695 for the Shelby Baja Raptor. For new 2020 models, you’ll find MSRPs at $117,460 from those authorized Shelby dealers.
At that price, it might make some hesitant to even back it out of the garage, let alone take it off-road. But, for those extreme off-road enthusiasts, this truck powerhouse may be worth every penny on the dunes. For true fans, the Baja Raptor represents the best of Shelby and F-150, neatly packaged in a stylish and unmatched pickup.
Whether you like it just to look at it or are serious about adding a true off-road pickup to your vehicle collection, the Baja Raptor is incredible. Find an authorized dealer near you to see one up close. You will be just as impressed as we are and might even be left just as speechless.
