In a world dominated by trucks and SUVs, it seems like cars are either getting sportier or more luxurious – but not smaller. Small cars aren’t all that common, and microcars are rarer yet. There is one small car that’s perfect for big city living, and you don’t have to sacrifice a modern experience to get enjoy owning one. The Smart EQ ForTwo isn’t much bigger than a golf cart – in fact, it’s smaller than some golf carts I’ve seen, but it’s got a lot to offer in an extra small package.

A small package that packs a punch

As you could guess from the name, this little Smart car only seats two people, and there isn’t much space for anything else. The car is minimally designed, and the interior is simple and plain as well. It isn’t meant to go far from home, with an electric range of fewer than 60 miles, but truth be told you probably wouldn’t be confident taking this car on the highway anyways due to the small stature.

There are a few trim levels that can improve the car’s overall level of luxury, including the addition of a panoramic sunroof, leather seats, alloy wheels, and even some sportier touches like a lowered suspension and paddle shifters.

You might be surprised to learn that even though the Smart ForTwo is half of the size of most modern sedans and coupes, it isn’t half the price. You can buy the 2019 model year for around $23,000 to start, and they can get as expensive as close to $30,000 for the prime trim level on the cabriolet.

Sporty and spunky

The Smart EQ ForTwo isn’t just some lame oversized Barbie Jeep for adults, it’s actually a pretty cool miniature electric vehicle. It’s rear-engined with rear-wheel drive, two things I found to be considered notable as this is something that’s only common in sportscars.

Its all-electric motor offers just 80hp – not that you’d want to be going crazy speeds in this tiny car anyways. The electric motor does offer a decent amount of acceleration that makes the car easily describable as ‘zippy’ and enjoyable for what it is. It has a top speed of about 80mph but chances are if you are using this car to get around town you won’t need to be going that fast anyway.

The new facelift for this little SMart car makes it look even cuter and even more modern. It doesn’t have any aggressive body lines, the front fascia is friendly and the car itself is pretty simple, but it does come with the option for a convertible top which makes it a little less claustrophobic.

The Smart EQ ForTwo is small enough to navigate heavy traffic of larger cities and small enough to park in even the tightest parallel parking spots. It’s an ideal car for driving around town or big city drivers who don’t want to hassle of a larger SUV, and it’s pretty cool while it zips around.
