The Subaru Crosstrek has been in North America since 2013 and it has become a popular choice for Americans that want a Subaru. It commutes, it off-roads, and it comes with a hybrid option. It carries the Subaru brand’s Love Promise and it probably loves to tote dogs just as much as any other Subaru model.

The Subaru Crosstrek, kicking up dust

In 2018 Torque News named the Subaru Crosstrek the most reliable Subaru. And now we are here to say that it still holds the title. Consumer Reports agree that the Subaru Crosstrek is still the most reliable Subaru.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek

The 2020 Crosstrek topped the Consumer Reports list for subcompact SUVs. It prevails as both the best overall as well as the most reliable. Redesigned in 2018, the Crosstrek has proved itself by earning a 5 out of five reliability rating from CR in every year of its new generation so far.

The Crosstrek appeals to people who don’t want the bulky size of an SUV, but still want the benefits of hatchback cargo and off-pavement performance. It also looks more rugged and edgy than say the Legacy or the Impreza, though both are AWD and pretty capable for what they are. Subaru took an Impreza that was already doing great and gave it some SUV style upgrades.

The 2020 Crosstrek is now equipped with Subaru’s SI-Drive powertrain management system, with was first available on the Subaru Forester and Subaru WRX models with a CVT(continuously variable transmission). The Subaru Eyesight system –– which was added as an option to the Crosstrek in 2015 –– now features lane centering.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek has upgraded quality interior materials, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard with the standard trim. The base model comes as a 6-speed manual, but can be upgraded to a nice powerful plug-in hybrid. Car and Driver does say that the Nissan Rogue Sport and the Honda HR-V both offer more space for cargo, but overall the Crosstrek holds its own and stands out among others in its class.

Crosstrek reliability

The Subaru Crosstrek’s reliability is as good as it gets, according to CR. Powered by a 2.0-liter 152-horsepower 4-cylinder engine or integrated with hybrid technology, this car doesn’t just boast great fuel economy. It also gets you where you’re going every time. Regular maintenance should keep one of these going for a long while. This Crosstrek generation will probably see many high mileage examples as it ages.

Other Subarus

The Crosstrek may be the most reliable, but several other Subarus are contenders as well. Other 2019 and 2020 models have earned the five out of five reliability rating from CR, too. The 2020 BRZ and the 2020 Impreza both earned a perfect reliability score. For 2019, Subaru’s Legacy and Outback both topped out their reliability ratings. The Crosstrek is the reliable poster child for a brand that has reliability in its back pocket.

Price

If you want to buy one of these reliable little SUVs, the base model (with the manual 6-speed) starts at $23,155. The upgrade to Premium will start about a grand more at $24,205. After that is the Limited trim which will set you back $28,405. If you want the hybrid option, you’ll have to dig deep into your pockets for a starting price of $36,155. As efficient as the regular gasoline version is, the hybrid may not be worth the up charge.
