The Tesla Model X 100D Is Unmatched in Its Combination of Power and Fuel Economy
Tesla has come under a lot of heat lately. The electric automaker has had more than its fair share of quality issues. That doesn’t seem to impact sales on the impressive Model X, however.
The Model X is full of hidden features that can only be discovered by spending some time in the cabin. This, among many other features, is why Consumer Reports thinks the Model X has the best combination of fuel economy and acceleration. Is that really accurate, though? Here’s what we found out.
The fuel economy and the acceleration are hard to beat
There’s two things that really get’s everyone’s attention when looking for a new vehicle. How fast can it go, and how efficient is the fuel economy?
When looking for a good SUV, you may feel like you have to sacrifice both of these things in favor of plenty of room and towing ability. Tesla has really gone above and beyond to make sure that the Model X has everything you could ever desire, however, so you no longer have to choose.
The MPGe are phenomenal. The Model X gets an astonishing 87 MPGe. The only other SUV to come close is the Jaguar I-Pace HSE, which gets 76 MPGe.
As far as acceleration, the Tesla Model X can go from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.9 seconds. The Jaguar I-Pace is the only midsize SUV that is faster, and it can go from 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds.
Is it fair to compare an electric vehicle to a gasoline powered SUV?
As great as the Tesla Model X is, and as insane as the MPGe is, it’s valid to wonder if it’s truly fair to compare a gasoline-powered vehicle to an electric one. It’s not exactly a fair fight. Still, does it actually matter?
That really depends on the consumers looking at this list. Not everyone is fans of electric vehicles. They prefer the tried and true gasoline-powered vehicles that we’ve had for years now.
Others are on the fence because there are simply so many questions about electric vehicles. For example, what happens if the battery dies and you aren’t near a charging station? You can’t jumpstart the EV battery pack, but there is a 12-Volt battery you can jump start that will give you enough juice to reach a charging station hopefully.
There are also a lot of myths that prevent many potential owners from giving electric vehicles a chance. Gasoline vehicles simply can’t compete with that, and while hybrids are the best of both worlds, they have a hard time keeping up, as well.
On the flip side, no one is talking about the price gouging happening with charging stations, meaning that you might be paying more to charge your electric vehicle than you would fill up your truck with a few gallons of gas. You can charge your Tesla for free at one of its stations, but if you can’t get to a Tesla station, you might be shocked at how much you’ll pay.
On that note, charging stations are a little sparse outside of cities. If you live in the country, then the chances of you finding a charging station are slim to none.
Just going on a road trip can be more than a little nerve-wracking in an electric vehicle, as you have to carefully plan out each stop. Forget about going off the beaten path. You have to stick to your carefully laid out route for fear of being stranded.
87 MPGe is amazing, but only if you stick to the tried and true. A gasoline-powered vehicle might be lucky to get 40 MPG, but you can at least zip into any gas station you pass and fill up.
Fair or not, the Model X is still an impressive vehicle
While it may not be fair to compare an electric vehicle to a gasoline- powered one, there is no doubt that the Model X is an impressive SUV. The acceleration speaks for itself, and there are a lot of other great features that make the Model X stand out from the crowd.
There have been several software updates that consumers will love. According to Consumer Reports, “Other software updates brought a Sentry Mode which uses the car’s cameras to monitor the car’s surroundings. Dog mode was also new and it runs the AC when a dog is left inside. A display on the car’s screen asks by-passers not to break a window to save the dog.”
For anyone who worries about taking their dog on a trip and running in the store, this is a game-changer. The falcon doors are also great for installing car seats, so if you have a little one, life just got a lot easier.
