The Three-Row Jeep Grand Cherokee is the Wagoneer We Want
The new Jeep Grand Wagoneer prototype isn’t exactly what Jeepers had in mind for the return of this vehicle. The new three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee may do a better job of meeting demands. But when will the new Jeep Grand Cherokee arrive?
Will the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee have three rows?
There is a lot of speculation and rumors floating around about a new Jeep model with three rows. Some of the rumors suggest that it could be a Jeep Compass, but spy shots from Motor Authority show a few updates that don’t include a third row.
But the spy shots provided by Auto Blog seem to be on to something. This time, the three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee prototype was spotted in the wild, scantily wearing less camouflage. While the prototype has a familiar shape, it looks to be a little longer to provide extra space.
It will have just enough room for a third-row seat and will be similar to the size of other midsize SUVs like the Ford Explorer and Toyota 4Runner. It will be in a slot above the Dodge Durango and under the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
The Jeep Grand Wagoneer vs. the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Wait a second. There is a new three-row Jeep Cherokee in the works? But we’ve already seen the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer prototype! Which new Jeep will be the better model? Well, they don’t exactly compare like apples to apples.
The new Jeep Grand Wagoneer is massive. It’s going to rival the Chevy Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade. It’s going to be the enormous family Jeep for people that need enough room to fit a large group of travelers. It may also beat the Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro at off-roading.
The Grand Wagoneer will share the same platform as the Ram 1500. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to ride on the Dodge Durango platform. Having an SUV on a truck platform gives Jeep the ability to take on rivals like the Sequoia.
However, the Wagoneer is a luxury SUV. So, it may have a pretty high price. For those that don’t need as much space, the Grand Cherokee will serve as a more economical option. Plus, there could be an even cheaper three-row Jeep Cherokee model.
Will these Jeeps have power?
To support the extra weight added by a third row, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will need more power. Perhaps the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 will be replaced by an inline-six engine. Personally, I really enjoy the inline-six in my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Also, there is a patent drawing for the new engine.
But the patent suggests the engine is heading for the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It could be the base engine option. However, the Grand Wagoneer will definitely have a V8 engine. The Sequoia has a 5.7-liter V8 engine with 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque.
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 has a 6.4-liter V8 HEMI with 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. These figures may change in the heavier Wagoneer, but it may provide more than enough power for a massive three-row SUV.
We hope to learn more soon. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is expected to come out in the summer of 2021. The Jeep Grand Cherokee shouldn’t be that far behind.
Both Jeeps will help meet a larger variety of family needs and demands. The Grand Wagoneer will have more space and power for those who need it, but the Cherokee will provide extra space and power at a lower cost.
