The Toyota Supra and Tacoma Are Both Surprisingly Unreliable
Toyota‘s reliability is no secret. It’s one reason Toyotas hold their value better than almost any other brand out there. Consumer Reports gives high marks across the board for nearly every vehicle in Toyota’s lineup. But the Toyota Tacoma tied with two other Toyotas for the least reliable.
These Toyota reliability scores aren’t as low as the Jeep Wrangler or the Chevy Colorado, who both scored a saddening 1 out of 5 for predicted reliability. But they did score lower than every other 2020 Toyota. The Toyota C-HR, the Toyota Supra, and the Toyota Tacoma are the least reliable Toyotas, according to Consumer Reports.
The 2020 Toyota Supra
Despite being one of CR’s least reliable Toyotas, the Toyota Supra is still a CR recommended vehicle. It’s 3 out of 5 predicted reliability score is redeemed by its stellar drive test score of 91 and a perfect owner satisfaction rating. Its overall score of 80 puts the 2020 Supra at number 3 out of 30 sporty/sorts cars over $40,000.
CR calls the Toyota Supra an “extroverted two-seater” that “is powered by a supersmooth and punchy 335-hp, 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder engine.” Inspired by the BMW Z4, this zippy little machine pleases on most levels. CR did mention poor visibility, a slightly rough ride, and an infotainment system that’s a bit wonky to figure out.
The 2020 Toyota C-HR
CR is not kind to the Toyota C-HR. The 2020 C-HR is “nimble through corners,” but otherwise riddled with “several notable deficiencies.” Unlike the 2020 Supra, the 2020 C-HR’s drive test and satisfaction scores did not redeem its low predicted reliability. The C-HR earned a 64 in its road test. It earned a sad 1 out of 5 for predicted reliability.
The CR review says that the C-HR can’t hold a candle to its competitors; AWD is not available. Additionally, the C-HR is slow as a “tortoise” with “horrendous” visibility. Its one redeeming feature is its 19 city/42 highway fuel economy.
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma
The Toyota Tacoma is a favorite among its class, but not among CR reviews. Nevertheless, the sturdy off-roader earned a really sad road test score, of just 42. CR complains of a stiff ride paired with slow and clumsy handling. The review sings the tune that the 2020 Tacoma hasn’t really changed much, even though it was “redesigned” in 2016.
“Although Toyota billed the 2016 Tacoma as a redesign, this was by no means a clean-sheet, start-from-scratch effort. The Tacoma remains as rough and tumble as it has always been.”

CR still admires the Tacoma’s “off-road prowess” and says the pickup is “tough as nails.” They appreciate the truck for its standard safety features as well. The CR review also notes the Toyota truck‘s modern connectivity is a nice upgrade from earlier model years. Conversely, they still only rated the Tacoma pickup truck 3 out of 5 for owner satisfaction.
The least reliable Toyotas
The 2020 Toyota Supra, C-HR, and Tacoma all made it on this list of least reliable Toyotas. They each represent completely different segments of Toyota’s lineup. The Tacoma and the Supra particularly are some serious fan favorites. But, they didn’t earn reliability ratings as high as other models. A couple of them are well loved, yet surprisingly unreliable.
