Is the Toyota Tacoma Hybrid truck on its way? Maybe. We have found some dirt suggesting that one of the two new Toyota Hybrid vehicles that will be released on Monday, May 18, could be the Tacoma. Check out what information we’ve been able to gather so far.

Is The Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Truck Coming? 

Toyota got its hybrid party started long ago with the Prius. Since then, there has been no shortage of new hybrid Toyota models. 

The Toyota RAV4, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Avalon Camry, and more all have hybrid versions so far. 

We know that the larger Toyota SUVs like the 4Runner seems to be off the table. But what about the midsize Toyota Tacoma? 

Hybrid Trucks Will Be Here Soon 

The Toyota Tacoma is a midsize truck that competes with larger ones like the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado pretty well. 

Plus, Ford is coming out with a plug-in hybrid Ford F-150 in 2022. Jeep is releasing all of its models with hybrid options by 2022 as well. 

Also, there are rumors of GMC and Chevrolet releasing hybrid truck models as well. A hybrid Chevy Silverado could compete. 

Hybrid trucks and SUVs seem to be where the market is trending, so Toyota may be jumping on this movement to compete against hybrid work trucks and hybrid off-roading vehicles. 

The Tesla Cyber truck, Rivian R1T, and Hummer EV are three luxury electric trucks that will be here soon, so will the electric Ford truck be the only economically priced option against these beasts? We hope not. 

Talk Of Toyota Hybrid Trucks 

In 2007, Toyota released the A-BAT subcompact hybrid concept truck. It used Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive System with a 4.0-liter engine. 

It was small and just as powerful as the Toyota Tundra. Even Though Toyota didn’t follow through with that plan, that doesn’t mean they won’t try again with a hybrid truck. 

The chief truck engineer of Toyota, Mike Sweers, mentioned knowing that truck owners don’t usually care about a poor fuel economy as long as they have more power. 

However, he mentioned the need for a cleaner vehicle as well, with the challenge of walking a fine line between more power and cleaner powertrains. 

Mike continued by saying currently they didn’t have a 2.0-liter engine that could tow 12k lb and then dropped hints that the Tacoma and Tundra are two vehicles they are working on making more efficient.

We also know that The Toyota Tundra and Tacoma are expected to share the same platform soon. 

Also, hybrid vehicles are beginning to pack more power and more capabilities than ever before. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid can produce 219 horsepower. 

Plus, spy shots have suggested that Toyota has been testing a hybrid Tacoma. Photographers claimed the truck sounded like it had a hybrid engine kick in around 25 to 35 mph too. 

The Lexus LS500 has a 3.5-liter twin-turbo hybridized engine that Toyota could borrow from. They could potentially create a hybridized version of their twin-turbo V6 to produce 400 to 500 horsepower. 

But unfortunately, we will have to wait until Monday for Toyota to release the two new hybrid vehicles that they have been keeping under wraps.
