As different as they are, they actually agree on something. The J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study has named both vehicles the most dependable large light duty pickup trucks in the segment.

This means it’s a tie. Both the 2017 Ford F-150 and the 2017 Toyota Tundra are the most reliable three year old trucks in America. Who would have thought it would take a dependability award to get these two to get along? Yeah, that might be pushing it. Still, J.D. Power says it’s a tie so now these two trucks have at least one more thing in common to jack up the competition.

The Toyota Tundra vs. the Ford F-150

The Toyota Tundra‘s starting price is $33,000, according to US News and World Report. The Ford F-150 on the other hand starts affordably at $28,495. But the Tundra’s base model is loaded compared to the F-150’s, which is little more than a super basic work truck.

The trucks have nearly identical factory warranty coverage. A 3 year/36,000 mile basic warranty accompanied by a 5-year/60-mile powertrain warranty is standard for both trucks. We’ll add that on the list of things the Toyota pickup and the Ford truck have in common.

They also have nearly identical bed cargo. However, the Tundra’s height makes it more difficult to load up for heavy hauling. The Tundra also trails behind the Ford pickup in terms of interior style and comfort––assuming you are looking for luxury in your pickup truck choice.

Which truck is better?

Both the Toyota Tundra and the Ford F-150 are fantastic trucks. They have are reliable work trucks, commuters, and family road trippers. They can each tow an ample amount of weight––enough for most towable hobbies.

The Toyota Tundra’s 381 horsepower V8 engine is plenty powerful. It comes in a variety of trims including some extremely capable off-roading packages. But Ford offers a range of options for its various F-150s. And let’s not forget the F-150 Raptor. In terms of performance, this truck leaves its competition in the dust. The sand-racing Ford Raptor pickup truck is powered by 450 power turbocharged V6.

And if that’s not what you want, there is a V8 and a turbodiesel option for the F-150, as well. We honestly can’t hate on the 5.7 liter V8 in the Toyota Tundra. But the Ford pickup just stands a little taller in this category.

These two popular trucks are adored by fans across the country. And though Ford sells vastly more F-150s than the Toyota Tundra, the half-ton Toyota truck still boasts a healthy fan base. They are rivals in every sense, and now they’ve seen a significant tie. The Ford F-150 and the Toyota Tundra can finally shake hands in friendly recognition of each other’s greatness.

This is a coveted award throughout the industry. If a vehicle touts high dependability, more units sell. It’s that simple. And US carmakers have been vying for this award for 31 years.
