The folks at Ford Authority recently took a look at the new Ford F-550 based EarthRoamer LTi. The new extreme off-road camper is the marriage of the best in luxury campers and the strength and might of Ford trucks. EarthRoamer is known for creating some pretty incredible off-road campers and the LTi might just be the best one yet.

Is the new EarthRoamer LTi the end all be all of off-road overland campers? Here’ what Ford Authority thinks.

Built Ford tough

EarthRoamer has a reputation for building incredible overland campers. People with the money can experience the pinnacle of luxury in a EarthRoamer camper that has all the off-road prowess of today’s most rugged trucks.

The LTi was built using the four-wheel drive chassis of a Ford F-550 just like the LTS before it. Under the hood, it has a 6.7-liter PowerStroke V8 engine. It’s a turbo diesel engine paired with a FoMoCo 10-speed automatic transmission that gets 330 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to either two or four wheels.

Unlike the models before it, the LTi carries a monocoque carbon-fiber vacuum infused camper body. It’s engineered to offer more stand-up height while being lighter and stronger than a standard overland or RV camper body. EarthRoamer claims the vehicle is over 1,000 pounds lighter than the LTS. 

The camper body isn’t the only thing here that’s strong but light-weight. The front and back bumpers are aluminum to give them the same qualities.

Loaded with features

There’s a touch screen that serves as the center for multiple controls like checking the battery and electrical levels. There’s an Auto Charge System on the LTi that alerts you to when battery levels drop to a certain level and directs the engine to automatically charge the batteries for you.

Also included are a cellular router, GPS, and other monitoring systems that help you keep track of the temperature, tire pressure, and all the door locks.

The on-board lithium-ion battery has an output of 11,000 watt-hours. Two inverter chargers supply 5,000 watts and 100 amps of current for charging. Rooftop solar panels give you 1,300 watts of power too. 

There are no generators or propane tanks on board the LTi. Water is electrically heated and it uses a diesel hydronic heater as opposed to engine coolant.

The EarthRoamer LTi can hold as much as 100 gallons of fresh water and 60 gallons of gray water. It can also carry up to 95 gallons of fuel.

A small luxury home on wheels

The EarthRoamer LTi is essentially a tiny luxury home. According to Business Insider, there are five different floor plans to choose from that use the interior space in different ways depending on your needs. 

You can seat six and sleep four in the Telluride but you lose space in the kitchen and pantry. You can seat and sleep four in the Boulder which has a mid-size galley and sofa and a larger food pantry.

There’s a lot of kitchen and counter space in the Aspen with its dinette booth but it seats and sleeps only three. The longest galley and biggest storage come with the Crestone that offers a medium-size sofa with seating and sleeping for three people.

The most popular floor plan is the Breckenridge which offers a dinette booth that converts into a six-foot bed. It has the same-size galley and sofa as Boulder but it seats and sleeps up to four people. 

On the inside, it’s six-foot ten inches tall with a bunk height of 31 inches. The height of the exterior is 11-feet 10-inches. You can enjoy the view with built-in side bunch windows and the multicolor indirect interior lighting. There’s also a fully-functioning shower and toilet.

You’ll need to be patient if you buy the LTi since they are built to order. EarthRoamer has a waitlist of about five months. The base price of the EarthRoamer LTi is $590,000. Top-equipped models can easily reach $700,000. But if you have the coin and you’re serious about your overland travel, the EarthRoamer LTi is the gold standard.
