Volkswagen’s goal of reaching carbon neutrality is slowly becoming a reality. While they teased us with renderings of the ID.Crozz over the past year, they released more information on the forthcoming Volkswagen ID.4, which is an electric SUV that’s about the same size as the Tesla Model Y. Fingers crossed, it should be in dealerships soon, but we might have to wait until the end of this year.

What is the ID.4?

The Volkswagen ID.4 is an SUV that’s would be in competition with the likes of the Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona Electric when it finally debuts. From what we know of it so far, it should have a 310-mile range and have fast charging times, which if it’s anything like its Audi E-Tron cousin, it should take around 30 minutes to fully charge. A decent range and faster charging time will definitely put it ahead of the pack.

The ID.4 will be the first electric vehicle from Volkswagen to be based on the brand’s MEB platform. The car does look similar to the ID.Crozz concept that we saw but it’s not as sleek. And if the spy shots that were taken of it recently are any indication then we can expect that the actual production vehicle will look just like what you see in the current renderings.

What else does it have?

Volkswagen has been pretty sparse with the exact details of the ID.4, but Car and Driver reported that its interior will likely be close to what the ID.Crozz concept displayed minus the fancy sliding rear doors, retractable steering wheel, and simplified interior layout. We can most likely expect a lot of interior and cargo room, thanks to the simplified interior cabin layout that we have seen in other electric vehicles like the Audi E-Tron.

Power-wise, we can only hope that Volkswagen stays true to the concept form and endows the ID.4 with a dual-motor 302-horsepower setup. According to the concept information, the car should have a motor powering the rear wheels and pushing out 201 horsepower, while the motor in between the front axles provides 101 more. This system would be similar to Audi’s electric Quattro system found on its E-Tron lineup, but again, we can really only speculate for now. We would be surprised if they made it that rear-biased though.

When does it come out?

There is no set date for when the Volkswagen ID.4 will be arriving at dealerships, however, the ID.3 is currently being produced at the company’s Zwickau, Germany plant, so it’s possible that they will start churning out ID.4’s pretty soon. While the details are currently few, the real story is that Volkswagen sounds like they are making good headway on their lofty electric-car goal and if all turns out well, then we should start to see some good progress in the future.

And in that case, it could very well be possible that Volkswagen might actually be able to dig themselves out of the diesel grave that they once carved so deep.
