In the world of luxury car brands, Genesis is the new brand on the block. Like many other luxury car brands, Genesis is actually part of another, larger car brand, and in Genesis’ case, it’s Hyundai. But unlike many other Hyundais, the Genesis G90 has one big flaw, according to Consumer Reports.

The Genesis G90’s poor fuel economy

As Consumer Reports explained, the G90 is a luxury sedan, and as such, it has a pretty powerful engine. Genesis offers a choice between a 3.3-liter V6 turbo that gets 365-hp or a 5.0-liter V8 turbo that gets 420-hp. Both of these are powerful engines, but the result of all those horses is a relatively poor fuel economy. 

Indeed, despite getting a 5 out of 5 rating for its acceleration, Consumer Reports gave the G90 a 2 out of 5 for its fuel economy. Consumer Reports only got 11 MPG in the city with the C90’s standard V6 engine. On highways, Consumer Reports got 28 MPG. Overall, Consumer Reports said that the G90’s fuel economy was a combined 18 MPG.

The EPA had slightly better results than Consumer Reports did, but not by much. The EPA says that the standard G90 should get 17 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on highways, for a combined 20 MPG.

The result of this poor fuel economy is a lot of money spent on gas per year. Consumer Reports says that, on average, it should cost about $1,600 for fuel for the G90 each year. In comparison, the EPA says that it could cost up to $2,400 to fuel up the G90 every year.

How does the Genesis G90’s fuel economy compare to others

Consumer Reports is the first to admit that luxury sedans with powerful and sporty engines are probably not going to get great fuel economies. However, despite acknowledging that fact, Consumer Reports also says that the G90’s fuel economy is bad even for its class.

For example, the BMW 750i and the Audi A8 get better fuel economies, as does the Audi A4 as well as pretty much any high-performance luxury EV, such as the Tesla Model S. 

Adding salt to the wound, Consumer Reports also says that the G90 isn’t as sporty as its European luxury counterparts are. It’s not a slow car by any means, but there are sportier sedans that have better fuel economies than the G90 does. 

A good or bad car overall?

Despite the G90’s poor fuel economy, Consumer Reports does think that the G90 is a good car. In fact, overall, Consumer Reports gave it a score of 82 out of 100, which makes it the third-best luxury car in its segment. The G90 is in the high-end luxury price range though, and as a result, it starts at $72,000 and can cost up to $78,000.

Overall, what you get for that price is luxury and performance. Sure, the G90 isn’t as sporty as its rivals, but it’s still very sporty. Plus, as Consumer Reports said, the G90 not only handles well, but it’s also very roomy and comfortable, both in terms of its ride quality as well as its noise levels.

On top of that, like many of Hyundai’s offerings, the G90 has a lot of high tech features as well as standard smart safety features. Consumer Reports says that those include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a pedestrian detection system, and more. 

The G90 is simply a refined car worthy of its price point. If you can afford it, you can probably afford its terrible fuel economy too.
