The Worst Things About the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX

No one needs the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. In fact, there aren’t many people who actually need a full-size pickup truck. Or a pickup truck at all. But you know what? Who cares? People buy things they don’t necessarily need all the time, and in a world where people only drive what they need the roads would be filled with nothing but second-generation Prius cars and Honda Groms. So even though lifted pickup trucks present major pedestrian safety concerns, we love living in a world where you can spend almost $100,000 on a pickup truck with more than 700 hp.

Even if you don’t have any interest in the TRX, you have to admit the idea of a factory off-roader with a massive supercharged V8 is pretty awesome. It’s also the kind of truck Ram was destined to sell ever since Dodge introduced the same engine in the Charger and Challenger Hellcats. But even something as awesome as the Ram 1500 TRX has its downsides. So since the first reviews have begun to trickle out, let’s take a look at the downsides highlighted in one of the more negative reviews.

The TRX is really, really big

It makes sense that the TRX wasn’t exactly developed with city driving in mind. After all, it’s a full-size off-roader. You’re supposed to drive it in places with plenty of space. But Jalopnik found in its first drive that TRX drivers may have issues with the size outside of big cities, as well.

As that review puts it, “At one point in old-west Virginia City, an oncoming sedan had to reverse and pull onto a side-street to allow me and another TRX behind me passage. In normal driving, it’s really bad.”

It’s not the best daily driver

Jalopnik also had complaints about how the TRX drove in town in addition to its gargantuan size. The reviewer also took issue with how it drives. Specifically, he complained that the throttle is jumpy, thought both the brakes and the steering felt disconnected, and had visibility issues that were caused by the tall ride height. It’s probably something you’d get used to over time, but we understand how those issues could be a problem for new owners.

The TRX’s infotainment could be better

Looking at the TRX’s interior photos, one feature that stands out more than all the others is the massive center touchscreen. Center screens have been around for a while, but this one really gives Tesla a run for its money. At least when it comes to screen size.

According to the reviewer, though, the infotainment system itself isn’t particularly intuitive, making it difficult to learn how to use. That’s apparently partly due to the fact that among other issues, frequently used functions require you to go through several screens before you can use them. The screen is also said to get dirty or dusty quickly, showing lots of fingerprints.

The fuel economy is pretty bad

Ram hasn’t released official EPA fuel economy figures yet, so we don’t know how the TRX compares to other pickup trucks. But with such a big engine and so much weight, you have to assume it’s not going to be much of an economy car. If you assumed the worst, though, you might actually be pleasantly surprised since Jalopnik didn’t see single-digit fuel economy.

Over about 150 miles of driving, the test truck burned slightly less than 15 gallons of fuel. In the end, that worked out to a very expensive 10.7 mpg. According to Jalopnik’s math, that means you can expect to spend about $5,600 on gas every year. Also, for comparison, the EPA says that at worst, the 2020 Dodge Challenger averages 16 mpg.
