ST, which stands for “sports-tuned,” is the performance trim level for Ford vehicles, including the 2020 Ford Edge ST. Is a performance crossover SUV an oxymoron or just what you’re looking for? If it sounds like just what you need, then read on for a way to get your Ford Edge ST and still save money.

The 2020 Ford Edge ST

With its performance 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6, the 2020 Ford Edge ST generates 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. The Edge ST is the only Edge version that has this engine. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes with all-wheel drive. It also features an upgraded suspension and thicker anti-roll bars. Its highest speed is estimated to be about 130 MPH, and it’s also able to tow up to 3,500 lbs too. It is taller for a performance vehicle, but CarBuzz still found it fun to drive.

The five-passenger crossover fits a family and is great to drive as well. The Edge also has a number of standard features. It comes with push-button start, wireless charging, remote start, and a hands-free liftgate. Its 8-inch touchscreen is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It comes standard with Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist features, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control with evasive steering, adaptive LED headlights, and an automatic parking system are available options.

The Edge ST has a few differences to distinguish it from the other trims. It comes standard with 20-inch wheels and has 21-inch wheels available. Lower trims have 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels with a different design. The Edge ST also sports a roof spoiler and dual-exit exhaust with a faux diffuser. In the front, it features a gloss black hexagonal grille plus LED headlights and taillights.

CarBuzz does feel the interior design could use some updates, but the Edge ST is comfortable with bucket seats, heated front seats, ambient lighting, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system all standard. Heating and ventilation in the rear seats is optional. The Edge ST has an Ebony interior. The seats are upholstered with Miko faux suede inserts and leather trimming with City Silver stitching and ST logos below the headrests. It has plenty of cargo room, with 39.2 cubic feet of space.

How the 2020 model is different from the 2019 Edge ST

One way to save some money and get basically the same vehicle is to skip the 2020 Edge ST and go for the 2019 model year. The Edge ST was updated for 2019 and hasn’t been changed much for 2020.

For 2020, it does have a new wheel design and the three new paint colors of Iconic Silver, Rapid Red, and Star White. These colors join Agate Black, Magnetic, and Ford Performance Blue. There were also three colors available for 2019 that have been discontinued: Baltic Sea Green, Stone Gray, and White Gold.

A CD player is no longer offered in the Edge ST for 2020, although it had been in 2019. The 2019 Edge ST did have a recall for a seatbelt issue, while the 2020 Edge ST doesn’t have any recalls so far.

Saving some money

The 2020 Ford Edge ST has a hefty starting price of $43,265, although it does include plenty of standard features. When fully loaded, the 2020 Edge ST is about $52,000. The 2020 base trim starts at $31,100 but doesn’t offer the performance features or engine. According to Consumer Reports, the 2019 Ford Edge now sells for between $21,050 and $33,800. As the top version, the 2019 Edge ST is likely at the top of that range.

The Ford Edge ST offers a fun performance engine and design for buyers who want both a crossover SUV and great driving. An easy way to save some bucks and get nearly the same vehicle is to go for the 2019 Ford Edge ST rather than the 2020 model.
