In the ultra-luxury SUV world, BMW’s X7 cuts a different swath. Unlike big SUVs from Audi or Lexus that trade on luxury or off-road ability, the X7 does its best to be a brutal hammer of technology and speed. Now, for 2023, it’s getting a shot of more of each in a redesign of the X7. The new 2023 BMW X7, though, will pack a few surprises that you may just want to wait for.

When is the BMW X7 coming out?

The BMW X7 gets a whole new look for 2023 and it will hit dealers in the third quarter of 2022. The new X7 SUV gets a revised front end with new twin headlights, a larger kidney grille, and new chrome and trim elements. Much of the update that BMW announced is focused on the SUV’s LED lighting elements that can double as turn signals. This is the first major revision for the X7 since it was introduced in 2019 as the big brother to the X5.

What engine will the BMW X7 have?

The big surprise for 2023 is that it’s getting monster power throughout the trim range that’s worth waiting for. the new BMW X7 xDrive40i will get a new 3.0-liter inline six engine. BMW makes silky smooth six-cylinder engines and the new one gets a ton of new tech that boosts it output to 375 horsepower in the X7, up 40 hp from the previous version.

It also gets an optional 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 option in the high-performance BMW X7 M60i. In the M60i, you get a 48-volt mild hybrid system that provides instant torque and helps the SUV hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. All X7s get an 8-speed automatic.

Is the BMW X7 a full-size SUV?

The X7 is BMW’s largest SUV and it carries a full-sized footprint. It has seating for six or seven. Those passenger sit in luxury, too, with multi-contour seats for the driver and front passenger standard. Lighting seems to be a theme on the new X7 and inside, too. BMW has added an ambient light bar that can pulse to the  beat of whatever tunes you’re playing.

Will there be an Alpina version of the X7?

BMW likes to amp-up its vehicles with either M or Alpina badges and the X7 gets an Alpina version called the XB7. However, the new 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 in the Alpina is boosted to 630 horsepower and can rock this giant SUV to 60 in 4.0 seconds according to BMW. That puts it close to the mighty Audi Q7’s acceleration.

You can spot the Alpina version by its four tailpipes, and different front and rear skirts. It will debut in early 2023.

How much is a 2023 BMW X7?

The new 2023 X7 starts at $77,850 for the xDrive40i version. The X7 M60i starts at a whopping $103,100. Destination costs $995. BMW hasn’t released pricing on the Alpina version.
