Moreover, they often have great fuel economy, but only two compact hatchbacks get over 50 miles per gallon!

2022 Hyundai Ioniq can actually exceed 60 mpg, but it’s going away next year

TrueCar rates the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid number one on its list of fuel-efficient compact hatchbacks. It’s easy to see why, too. The car gets remarkable fuel economy and has a reasonable purchase price.

In standard format, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq hybrid already surpasses the 50 mpg milestone. According to the EPA, it gets 54 mpg city and 57 mpg highway for an impressive combined rating of 55 mpg. However, stepping up to the Ioniq Blue model gets even more impressive thanks to its hybrid blue technology. It sees fuel economy ratings of 58 mpg city and 60 mpg highway, combining to make 59 mpg.

Unfortunately, with the successful rollout of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV and the recently announced Ioniq 6 EV, the standard Ioniq hybrid is coming to an end after the 2022 model year. That being said, it may make for an awesome opportunity to jump on one of these vehicles in the used market.

2022 Toyota Prius also surpasses 50 mpg

The other 50+ mpg hero in the compact hatchbacks list is, of course, the Toyota Prius. After all, you can’t have a conversation about super-efficient hybrid vehicles without mentioning the legend itself. Though it has long been the victim of criticism, it has just as long been one of the best-selling hybrid vehicles in the world.

The 2022 Prius range offers all sorts of fantastic options, too. There’s an all-wheel drive variant that’s the most fuel-efficient AWD car on the market. In addition, the stylish Prius nightshade adds a touch of black accenting, while the Prius Prime is a plug-in hybrid that surpasses 130 MPGe.

In standard back-to-basics format, though, the regular Prius hybrid delivers 54 mpg city and 50 mpg on the highway. Frankly, that’s a fantastic number for a standard hybrid vehicle.

Get these efficient compact hatchbacks while you can!

Although there’s no end in sight for the Toyota Prius, we’ve already established that the Ioniq is going, going, gone.

So, if you’re not quite ready for the EV revolution, but you want some outstanding fuel economy without having to plug in at all, you’d best hurry and get your hands on one of these vehicles before it’s too late!

Obviously, the demand for fuel-efficient vehicles right now is clashing with the supply shortage of both new and used vehicles. So, the pricing on these models is looking a little bleak. Hopefully, though, things will level out in the near future, and everyone who wants to break that sweet 50 mpg threshold can get a vehicle to do so!
