These 5 Luxury Cars Have the Worst Depreciation on the Market
When it comes to depreciation, luxury cars tend to lead the way. For used car bargain hunters, it’s a blessing. For owners who buy their opulent dream ride new, it could be a disappointing discovery. Regardless, the Maserati Quattroporte, BMW 7 Series, and other luxury models lose more value than any other popular sedans on the market.
The five luxury car models with the worst depreciation on the market are from just three brands
Unsurprisingly, the Maserati Quattroporte leads the market in five-year depreciation. In fact, owners might be shocked to discover that their Quattroporte is worth an average of $90,588 less than it was new.
Make and model | Average five-year depreciation | Average difference from MSRP |
---|---|---|
Maserati Quattroporte | 64.5% | $90,588 |
BMW 7 Series | 61.8% | $72,444 |
Maserati Ghibli | 61.3% | $58,623 |
BMW 5 Series Hybrid | 58.8% | $37,975 |
Jaguar XF | 57.6% | $39,720 |
Nationwide average | 38.8% | $17,221 |
According to the latest value retention data, Maserati and BMW produce four of the top depreciating models in the luxury car segment. The 7 Series, BMW’s longest luxury sedan model, takes the No. 2 spot in the study, shrugging off an average of 61.8% of its original value in the first half-decade.
The Ghibli, another four-door luxury sedan from the trident-bearing car marque, takes the No. 3 spot just behind the big Bavarian. It’s unfortunate for fans of the classic Italian brand, as two out of three of the fastest-depreciating cars on the market are from its library of offerings. Finally, the hybridized BMW 5 Series and Jaguar XF take the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.
It’s not surprising, either; luxury cars tend to lose value much quicker than other vehicle types. Specifically, luxury models tend to drop an average of 48.1% in the first five years, per iSeeCars. That’s around 11.3% worse than non-luxury models and 9.3% worse than the nationwide average for all vehicles.
Still, the precipitous drop in value could be a blessing in disguise for shrewd collectors. Of course, one of the contributing factors to luxury vehicle depreciation is the average cost of maintenance. As a result, bargain hunters will have to budget to keep their opulent dream cars on the road.
