One of the best driving roads in New York is the High Peaks Scenic Byway
You don’t need a sports car to enjoy a nice drive; you don’t even need four wheels. Case in point: NYS Route 73, High Peaks Scenic Byway in New York. Autoblog put this road first on the list of some of the best driving roads in the U.S. Drivers can enjoy the High Peaks Scenic Byway any time of year, but fall makes it even more spectacular.
The 30-mile road goes through the six-million-acre Adirondacks Park and all of the mountain peaks in the area. Autoblog says this park is “bigger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, and Great Smokies Grand Canyon parks combined.” There is no fee to get to this road, and it doesn’t close at any particular time so that drivers can access it whenever.
California has Highway 1, also known as Pacific Coast Highway
Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway or PCH, is a pleasant drive through some of California. The 666-mile road goes through many popular areas of California. If you’ve ever seen a road trip movie that takes place in the state, there’s probably a scene on this road. If you are renting a car, you may as well get a convertible and just go for it. Have your Britney Spears moment like that scene in Crossroads.
One of the best driving roads in Tennessee/North Carolina is the Tail of the Dragon
You have probably heard of U.S. 129, aka the Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee/North Carolina. Enthusiasts flock from all over to check out the winding curves of the Dragon. Unfortunately, that has also made it a bit busier and more dangerous at times. However, with 318 turns through the 11-mile road, sometimes it is not for the faint of heart.
It was suggested to avoid the Tail of the Dragon on weekends due to how busy it can be. Use your best judgment on this one and don’t push it to the limits, and definitely don’t cross over the double yellow lines. There are a lot of other roads that go through the Great Smoky Mountains that can make for a more serene drive if that’s more of your scene.
Texas has FM 335, 336 and 337, also known as the The Twisted Sisters
FM 335, 336, and 337 are called The Twisted Sisters roads. Motorcyclists and cars alike love to hit this 100-mile set of roads near San Antonio. And while the drive is nice, there’s a lot to see on the adventure. You might come upon some cows, pigs, or deer while heading through. Autoblog suggests checking out Keese’s BBQ in Medina while getting gas before the trip. There’s also the Devil’s Sinkhole in Rocksprings, which has a nightly show of millions of bats from May to October.
Hells Canyon Scenic Byway takes the cake for best road in Oregon
In Oregon, the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is a 218-mile marvel around the Wallowa Mountains. It also takes drivers to the Hells Canyon Recreation Area and Snake River area, near the border on Idaho. One area of the Snake River is actually the deepest river gorge in the country at 7,993 feet deep. That is deeper than the Grand Canyon! It should be noted that drivers should get gas when it is available because gas stations are sparse along the route. Keep an eye out for fish!
