Finding affordable car insurance is a common conundrum for many of today’s automobile owners. In fact, it’s so problematic, consumers are constantly being hammered with commercials about the cheapest insurance options available. What these insurers don’t share with consumers is the fact that what you drive can drive up the price of your insurance. Expensive models like the Jeep Gladiator or high-performance sports cars such as the 2020 Porsche 718 GT4 will come with seriously steep insurance premiums.

Especially for people on a tight budget, finding an affordable car from both a sticker-price standpoint and long-term insurance costs can be challenging. Based on data from motor1.com, these vehicles are some of the cheapest to insure in 2019.

What you need to know about 2019 car insurance rates

Consumers should always look into insurance before buying a car so they aren’t hit with sticker-shock when looking at their policy. The Insurance Information Institute of America offers a few tips to help customers to save money on rates in addition to the tried and true method of bundling your home and auto insurance if you can.

When it comes to your policy, look into increasing your deductible as this can make a significant impact on your premium cost. Drivers with older vehicles may consider reducing optional coverages to lower their premium. There are also specific discounts you can look out for such as low mileage discounts for people who don’t drive a lot during the year. Talk to your provider to see if you’re missing out on any savings, especially when shopping around for a new policy for a new, or new to you, vehicle. The following cars are great options for people looking to buy an affordable vehicle that won’t need a costly insurance plan.

Subaru Forester

A popular four-wheeling option, the Subaru Forester model is both reliable and dependable. The estimated average insurance cost for a Forester comes in at just under $1,350. Factor in a starting price tag just over $24,000, the Forester certainly won’t break the bank. Although it doesn’t come with many bells-and-whistles in the standard model, it does offer decent fuel economy, a spacious cargo area, and a user-friendly experience, according to an Edmunds review of the 2019 model.

Ford Escape

If you’re looking for something affordable with some fun tech options, look no further than the Ford Escape. Ford punched up its offering with the 2019 model, including its Sync 3 infotainment system standard on SE models where it was formerly an option. The Escape starts around $24,000 and estimates place the average insurance cost around $1,344 for annual coverage. Considering the average cost over time, Ford’s SUV model may be an attractive choice to some buyers.

Jeep Renegade

While Jeep may offer some pricier models, like the Gladiator, that would be more expensive to insure, the Renegade is not one of them. The Renegade most naturally competes with Chevy’s Trax and Subaru’s Crosstrek, although it slightly out-prices the competition starting at just over $22,000. This Jeep model shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to insure, though. Insurance estimates place the Renegade right around $1,338 for yearly coverage.

Mazda CX-3

Mazda’s subcompact crossover was called a “standout” in its class in Edmunds’ expert review. The Mazda CX-3 starts at just over $20,000 and insurance estimates place it at $1,300 for a year of coverage. It’s certainly one of the most affordable options on this list with a lower price point and average insurance cost. Edmund’s also highlighted the vehicles comfortable interior and impressive fuel economy (for a crossover) as pros for the model.
