If you’re going to spend a large sum on a luxury car, you don’t want to get stuck with an unreliable model. Of all the cars on the Consumer Reports luxury car ratings list, these are the least reliable luxury cars of 2020. Let’s take a closer look at each of the unreliable 2020 luxury sedans and see why it might be important to steer clear of them. Consumer Reports lists the luxury cars in groups according to their relative size.

There is the entry-level classification, compact cars, and mid-size. As the CR list of most reliable luxury cars didn’t have any perfect reliability scores, so the entry-level did not show any cars with the worst reliability rating either. So we will just skip past the Acura ILX and the Mercedes-Benz CLA and A-Class to the compact and mid-size luxury cars. This is where we start to see cars with some pretty bad reliability ratings.

The 2020 BMW 3 Series

In its road test, the BMW 3 Series scored a high rating of 86 total. CR really didn’t have much in the way of negative comments for the 330i that they drove. In fact, it’s hard to find anything negative in the review on CR. However, the S Series is easily one of the more expensive on the list. With a starting price over 40 grand, this compact luxury car can easily have a final price tag well over 50 grand. What about the poor reliability?

The BMW 3 Series has not just 1 or 2, but 6 recalls. This contributes to its dismal 1 out of 5 predicted reliability score. The 2020 3 Series is held back by its poor reliability ratings earning an overall rank of #11 out of 16 with a total score of 63.

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia

The Alfa Romeo Giulia fared even worse for the 2020 model year. CR also gave the 2020 Giulia a 1 out of 5 reliability score. CR says it “oozes style and character” and “handles like a sports car,” but that the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia “ultimately, compared to some of its near-perfect peers, the Giulia falls short on interior quality, quietness, and ergonomics, among other things.” The 2020 Giulia is down at #14 of 16 on the CR ratings list.

The 2020 Audi A6

The 2020 Audi A6 is among our mid-size class for least reliable 2020 luxury cars. And it fell way short of expectation, according to CR. With its high starting price range of $54,900 – $73,900, the Audi A6 just isn’t really worth it. Especially when you take into account the 1 out of 5 reliability rating. Even though it scored a 93 in the road test, its failings left it with a score of 64 overall, putting it in 10th place out of the CR list of 16 mid-size luxury cars.

“The redesigned Audi A6 is among the best midsized luxury sedans we’ve tested. It has class-leading fuel economy, lively and sporty handling, an easy-to-use infotainment system, and an elegant, if understated, interior. However, the Audi’s low-speed manners and its ride, which is on the firm side, prevent it from taking top honors in the class.”

The 2020 Maserati Ghibli

The 2020 Ghibli is another mid-size luxury car that made the least reliable list. This is Fiat’s attempt at giving in to public demand for a “budget” Maserati. Though its price tag is significantly cheaper than other Maserati models, it still tops this list in terms of price. The 2020 Maserati Ghibli starts at $69,490 – $83,790. It scored a 71 on the CR road test, a sad 1 out of 5 for predicted reliability, and a 51 overall rating.

The least reliable 2020 luxury sedans

Of all the auto investments you might make, thinking twice about one of these models may be to your benefit. The luxury segment is full of great vehicles, and some of them have a reputation for reliability. But the compact and mid-size sedans on this list are the least reliable luxury cars of 2020.
