The average American drives more than 13,000 miles each year commuting, traveling, and adventuring. Decade-old vehicles, however, hold an average of 11,987 miles per year. But some cars are better designed for longevity and reliability than others and are driven for many more miles than the average.

The people at iSeeCars.com analyzed more than 2.3 million sales of 10-year-old cars from the years 2015 to 2018 to find which vehicles had the highest average annual mileage over those 10 years. While full-size SUVs dominated the list, with between 12-24% above average mileage per year, 10 passenger cars were also driven for more than the average vehicle. For these purposes, passenger cars are vehicles excluding minivans, SUVs, and trucks. According to iSeeCars.com, here are the passenger cars Americans are driving the most each year.

1. Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius is known for its reliable battery, which can last an average of up to 15 years, according to Autoblog. Its amazing fuel economy is one of the main reasons the Prius is driven often and for long distances. The study found that the Prius was the number one driven passenger car, with an average of 13,534 miles per year. This is 12.9% above the average mileage a 10-year-old vehicle gets.

2. Nissan Altima

Nissan’s Altima is one of its longest-running and best-selling mid-sized sedans. It’s been around since 1992 and is known for its excellent performance and driving characteristics. The Altima also comes with top safety ratings and low cost of ownership. With a 10% above-average mileage, the Nissan Altima is driven roughly 13,184 miles each year. 

3. Chevrolet Malibu

The Chevrolet Malibu has undergone many changes throughout the years, disappearing and reappearing on the Chevy lineup. It comes with the reliability that General Motors is known for and has gained better fuel efficiency throughout the years. Affordable and reliable, Malibus are driven for an average of 12,747 miles each year; 6.3% above the average car.

4. Honda Accord

With 12,744 average miles per year, the Honda Accord is one of the most reliable passenger cars out there. It’ also remains to be one of the best-selling vehicles in the country. The Accord is driven 6.3% more than the average decade-old car and also sits at the top of Consumer Reports’ vehicles most-likely to reach 200,000 miles.

5. Chevrolet Impala

America first saw the Chevrolet Impala back in 1958 and it’s known for its muscle-car-like characteristics, with an affordable price tag. The Impala is one of Chevy’s longest-running vehicles, currently in its eighth generation. The Chevrolet Impala is unsurprisingly driven more than other vehicles on the road, with a 10-year mileage 6.1% above average at 12,719 average miles per year.

6. Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is driven on the road 5.2% more per year than an average decade-old vehicle, at 12,608 average miles per year. The Camry is one of the most-produced vehicles in the country, known for its strong reliability. Camry consumer complaints are well below the average when compared with other vehicles and account for almost half a million sales in the U.S. alone.

7. Honda Civic

Honda is known for its strong and reliable lineup and the Civic is no exception. As a leader in the market, the Civic typically retains good market value and can maintain dependability even with high mileage. Around since 1972, the older Honda Civics see roughly 12,575 miles on the road each year, 4.9% above the average.

8. Volkswagen Jetta

Efficiency and reliability are Volkswagen’s middle names, producing some of the most unique and consumer-friendly vehicles for decades. Aerodynamics and handling make the Jetta one of VW’s most-favored vehicles, selling more than 17 million worldwide, according to Cars.com. The average decade-old Jetta is driven 4.1% more than average, at 12,472 miles per year.

9. Nissan Maxima

Driven 4% more than the average vehicle, a 10-year-old Maxima is driven roughly 12,461 miles per year. As a full-sized, upscale vehicle, the Maxima is Nissan’s flagship sedan. Known for its solid driving characteristics and extensive mileage capabilities, the Nissan Maxima is a premium vehicle at a consumer-friendly price.

10. Ford Taurus

The Ford Taurus was a groundbreaking vehicle when it hit the market in 1986. It once held the title of the best-selling vehicle and was redesigned time and time again to maximize performance and efficiency. Known for always leading the way in technology and design advancements, there’s no surprise that the Taurus is driven 3.6% more than average, at 12,420 miles per year.
