If you want a Ferrari-powered daily driver without a Ferrari price tag, you should give Maserati a close look. Under the hood of certain Maserati models lives a V8 shared with mid-engined supercars. However, a new report by CarBuzz suggests that while these models are fun and powerful, they are extremely thirsty. For 2021 you can get this exotic powertrain under the hood of any brand new Maserati.

How do these machines have Ferrari power?

The arrival of the Maserati Levante brought forth an ultra-powerful variant known as the Trofeo. Under the hood lives a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 developing 580 hp and 538 lb-ft, says CarBuzz.

If we look at this engine’s history, we find that it was developed originally by Ferrari in 2013. Ironically, the engine made its first debut back in 2013 with the Maserati Quattroporte GTS. From there, it went on to live under the hood of the Ferrari California T, GTC4Lusso T, Portofino, Roma, 488 GTB, 488 Pista, and F8 Tributo. As a result, this powertrain lives in models that make over 700 hp.

CarBuzz report that for 2021 the Trofeo name expands to both the Ghibli and Quattroporte. While these new models feature the powerful powertrain, they won’t stick around for long. According to CarBuzz, Ferrari’s contract with Maserati is expected to end soon. As a result, future models will likely utilize a new twin-turbo V6 instead.

How thirsty are these 2021 Maserati models?

Since all of these Maserati models feature the same powertrain, it won’t surprise you to learn that they share identical fuel-efficiency ratings. According to CarBuzz, the Trofeo models consume 13 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway for a combined average of 16 mpg. As you’d expect, you’ll be having to stop for extra fuel quite often.

According to CarBuzz, the most efficient model in the carmaker’s lineup is the base Ghibli, which consumes 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway for an average of 17 mpg.

Ironically, the Ferrari models that share engines with these Trofeo models manage to be more efficient. The Ferrari 488 GTB, for example, consumes 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. The smaller and weaker Portofino also consumes 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. As you’d expect, these mid-engined sportscars are significantly lighter, creating a massive impact on efficiency.

Are these models reliable?

Throughout the years, Maserati hasn’t exactly held some of the industry’s most reputable reliability ratings. However, since these powertrains come directly from Ferrari, there is hope for the Trofeo models. According to a thread on Ferrari Chat, various owners have chimed in stating how reliable their V8-powered cars are. As a result, this should help these Trofeo models massively.

If you’re looking at standard Maserati models, you’ll want to tread carefully. According to Consumer Reports, all three of its current models scored poorly in its predicted reliability and owner satisfaction categories. What makes this an unfortunate situation is that some of these models excel in the road test section, meaning they would make fun daily drivers. Regardless, if you want the best of the brand, you’ll have to shell out well above six-figures for the Trofeo models.
