Full-size SUVs aren’t known for their fuel efficiency. They’re great at a lot of things: transporting lots of people or cargo, allowing drivers to sit higher up, and being safe due to their general size. Yet they’re not great on gas. Very few large SUVs are good on gas, and until car manufacturers start making electric Chevy Suburbans, we’re probably going to continue to see these behemoth SUVs on the roads. If you want to buy a full-size SUV and save money on gas, you might want to avoid some of the worst SUVs on gas.

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is not going to save money on gas

If you’re looking to save money on gas, do not look at the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser. According to Consumer Reports, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser only gets 14 mpg overall. That incorporates 10 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. Consumer Reports does its own fuel economy testing that is separate from the EPA estimates. 14 mpg is pretty low, even as far as full-size SUVs go. The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser’s estimated annual fuel costs are $2,000.

The 2021 Nissan Armada is one of the worst SUVs to buy for fuel economy

The 2021 Nissan Armada ties with the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser in fuel economy. It gets just 14 mpg, making it one of the worst SUVs on gas. In addition to its 14 mpg, the 2021 Nissan Armada gets 10 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. Consumer Reports says that “Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.” The 2021 Nissan Armada’s estimated fuel costs are $2,040.

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia is not one of the best SUVs on gas

The 2021 Toyota Sequoia might be Consumer Reports recommended, but it will definitely not save money on gas. While slightly better than its Toyota Sibling the Land Cruiser, the 2021 Toyota Sequoia gets just 15 mpg. That includes 10 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. The 2021 Toyota Sequoia’s yearly fuel costs are estimated to be about $1,975. Consumer Reports measures this by calculating the cost of driving the SUV over the course of 12,000 miles at their estimated fuel economy.

The 2021 Infiniti QX80 is a full-size SUV with bad gas mileage

You might be interested in the 2021 Infiniti QX80 because of its luxury appeal, but if you’re concerned about fuel economy, you’ll want to steer clear of it. The 2021 Infiniti QX80 gets just 15 mpg, including 11 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. Its estimated fuel costs are $2,190 per year, making it one of the most expensive SUVs to drive. 

Other large SUVs may not be a whole lot better, but there are slightly better choices. The 2021 Chevy Suburban, 2021 Ford Expedition, and 2021 GMC Yukon XL all get 16 mpg in Consumer Reports tests. And if you want a luxury SUV, you can always go for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS, which is the best gas mileage SUV on this list, at 20 mpg. That includes 13 mpg in the city and a very high 30 mpg on the highway. If you want a full-size SUV, you may want to shop for one of these instead.
