Hyundai has been a company on the move lately. They recently launched the Palisade and demand is booming for it. But, sales are not the only place where Hyundai is moving the needle. The company has been working diligently to increase the fuel efficiency ratings of its vehicles. Slowly but surely, Hyundai has been able to provide more and more vehicles in its line-up that reach forty miles per gallon or more.

The list below comes from Hyundai’s website. It is important to note that some of these vehicles will have an “MPGe” figure listed. That is a miles-per-gallon equivalency for non-liquid fueled vehicles, such as electric and fuel cell cars.

2020 Kona Electric

Hyundai claims the Kona Electric is “the world’s first all-electric subcompact SUV”. It is available only in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

This model achieves a 120 MPGe combined score. 

It is a plug-in electric vehicle with a range of up to 258 miles. 

The starting price for the $37,190

2020 Nexo Fuel Cell

Top-of-the-mind awereness may not be there for the Nexo yet. Hyundai claims it is the “world’s only fuel-cell SUV”. That’s because it is a hydrogen vehicle. There aren’t many offerings out there otherwise. As such, the vehicle is being sold in limited areas of the United States. According to Hyundai’s website, the only Nexo charging stations available right now are in California.

  • The Nexo achieves 61 MPGe combined.
  • It is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle with an estimated range of 380 miles.
  • The starting price for the Nexo is $58,735

2020 Accent

  • The Accent name has been around for decades now. It’s an economical subcompact. 
  • The Accent achieves 33 city / 41 highway miles per gallon.
  • The starting price for the Accent is $14,295

2020 Elantra 

  • The Elantra is another nameplate that’s been in the Hyundai stable for decades. It represents a step up from the Accent. It is considered a compact vehicle. 
  • The Elantra achieves 33 city / 41 highway miles per gallon.
  • The Elantra starting price is $18,150

2019 Sonata Hybrid

  • The Sonata Hybrid has only been around for a few years. However, it is based on the already popular Sonata mid-size platform. 
  • The Sonata Hybrid achieves 40 city / 46 highway miles per gallon.
  • The starting price for the Sonata Hybrid is $23,750

2020 Ioniq

The Hyundai Ioniq is a new offering from Hyundai. It is actually available in three ways. It is available as an electric car, a hybrid car, and a plug-in electric and hybrid car. So, be careful when researching this vehicle to make sure the data is for the correct configuration. 

2020 Ioniq Electric

  • The Ioniq Electric achieves 133 MPGe combined.
  • It is a plug-in electric vehicle with a range of up to 170 miles.
  • The starting price for the Mirai is $33,045

2020 Ioniq Hybrid

  • The Ioniq Hybrid achieves 57 city / 59 highway miles per gallon.
  • The starting price for the Rav4 Hybrid is $22,200

2020 Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid

  • The Ioniq Hybrid achieves 119 MPGe.
  • It is a plug-in electric vehicle with an all-electric range of up to 29 miles.
  • The starting price for the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid is $26,500

Increased fuel-efficiency is something that all manufacturers are chasing. Indeed, if they do not chase greater efficiency, then the government will penalize them yearly until their corporate average numbers finally do go up. That is a lot of money that can be lost in penalties otherwise. To avoid penalties, or at least limit them, Hyundai has been doing a good job with its efforts to move the miles-per-gallon needle up for its gas engines, as well as offering hybrid and electric alternatives that have their own positive effect too.
