A Reddit user recently posed a question on the social media platform: What modern cars are laughably unequipped from the factory? The user went on to explain that their vehicle was in the shop. They were currently driving their sibling’s SUV, the 2010 Jeep Patriot, which had neither power locks nor power windows.

Other users chimed in about the features that were surprisingly missing from some popular modern cars. What are the features missing in which vehicles? 

They don’t have the power 

A surprising number of vehicles in the thread had no power door locks or power windows, just like the Jeep Patriot mentioned in the original post.

One user in the thread had posted about his wife’s 2010 Nissan Versa. Not only does the sedan lack power locks and windows, but it’s also missing several other features that many consider essential. 

The 2010 Versa doesn’t have power mirrors, rear-seat vents, aux cord, Bluetooth capability, trunk light, or glove box light. There’s no mirror on the back of the sun visors or trunk release button.

Other users commiserated with the Versa owner. One said their 2019 Nissan Frontier wasn’t much better with mostly manual features. Another user commented that his 2009 Toyota Tacoma was similar.

Basic Work Trucks 

The mention of the Toyota Tacoma prompted one user to mention that their 2016 Tacoma didn’t have many convenience features like power door locks. The Tacoma SR models were basic work trucks with minimal frills. Another user pointed out that the top-level Tacomas had drum brakes and no way to raise or lower the seats. Outside of a reliable drivetrain, the Tacomas were pretty basic, they said.

Another user mentioned driving both a 2017 Nissan Frontier and a 2020 Ford Ranger, and neither had power windows. The base S model of Nissan Frontier for years offered only manual locks and windows. The 2020 models have made power locks and windows and push-button start standards across all models. It’s also the final year of production for the current generation.

The owner of a 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series explained it was less equipped than you would expect. With the WorkMate trim, the truck has manual windows, recently added cruise control, and no remote locking. They explained that the truck didn’t have anti-lock brake or traction control systems and no driver-assist features. The infotainment system is a CD player.

Other users chimed in. The latest Ford Ranger has manual windows in the base model and no cruise control. The 2021 Ford F-150 also has manual windows at the base level.

Even luxury vehicles 

One user pointed out that Porsche had some expensive charges for basic features.  

The owner of a 2020 BMW 320i pointed out the vehicle had manual seats that weren’t heated, rear seats that don’t fold, and manual mirrors. It didn’t have a backup camera, alarm system, or a door lock sound. The user admitted that it wasn’t the same as the lack of basic power locks and windows, but it was disappointing for what you pay for in a luxury car.

Another user pointed out there were lots of convenience features left off any BMW base trim. They’d owned a 328i, and its rear seat wouldn’t fold down.

One user mentioned the Porsche 718 Cayman Boxster as having manual seats, a modest audio system, no keyless entry, and no steering wheel controls. Another said that in using the Porsche configuration calculator, one realized how the automaker made many features we take for granted optional when purchasing one of their vehicles.  

Many users mentioned not knowing a feature was missing from a vehicle they bought until well after they purchased it. It’s important to research any vehicle carefully you’re interested in buying, so there are no surprises, and you know what you’re getting.
