These Super-Star Athletes Still Drive Cheap Cars
With the amount of money athletes are making today, it is often no surprise to hear them purchase a few of the more expensive options the world has to offer. Several of them spend their money on extravagant homes, lavish purchases, and fancy cars; with sports cars often a preferred favorite.
However, despite the insane amount of money they make, some super-star athletes have instead opted for a more reserved lifestyle sticking with cheap, more affordable cars. We looked around and made a list of some of the athletes who, despite earning enough to buy the most expensive cars, still drive cheap vehicles;
LeBron James
Aside from many basketball fans referring to LeBron James as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game, with some comparing him to Michael Jordan, he is also one of the wealthiest basketball players gracing the NBA courts today.
According to Forbes, he has a net worth of $450 million; a majority of that coming from several lucrative endorsements he has been part of throughout his playing career. Despite having close to half a billion dollars, LeBron James owns a Kia K900 whose 2019 model year retails for less than $60,000.
The Kia is, however, not the only vehicle in his repertoire with a 2012 Bentley GT and 2006 Hummer H1 also in his garage.
Jimmy Butler
Jimmy Butler is the other NBA star with a rather surprisingly humble vehicle ferrying him to and from practice. Despite making more than $77 million throughout his career, this four-time All-Star owns a 2017 Toyota Sienna whose retail price starts at $29,750.
With some of his teammates driving around in Ferraris, Butler’s Sienna shows that he is clearly not the type to flaunt what his earnings can get him.
Kirk Cousins
Even though he made more than $20 million back in 2016 alone, the NFL quarterback drives a GMC Savana passenger van. If that wasn’t enough, the vehicle he drives was bought from his grandmother in 2014, is dented, and has over 100,000 miles.
In an interview with Kevin Clark, a journalist from The Wall Street Journal, Cousins said he prefers to buy assets that appreciate.
Nnamdi Asomugha
From spending 11 seasons in the NFL earning up to $11 million every year, to successfully transitioning into acting, Nnamdi Asomugha has made enough to treat himself to a few expensive rides.
This is not true. Nnamdi Asomugha chooses to live a modest life highlighted by him owning a 1997 Nissan Maxima which he still uses today. He actually never bought the car. He got the 1997 Maxima from his older brother while in high school, and he even drove it to prom. Despite people making fun of him for the car and the ton of money he made, he still kept it.
John Urshel
His story is a rather peculiar one. After being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2014, the offensive lineman went on to spend three seasons with the NFL team, making $1.8 million during that period. Urshel, however, chose to retire in 2017 to pursue a PhD at MIT.
After getting a signing bonus of $144,560, he went and bought a used Nissan Versa in 2014 for $9,000. His car is not the only way he practices modest living having written in The Players’ Tribune that he spends less than $25,000 annually.
According to John Urshel, his modest lifestyle is not because he is saving for a bigger purchase or because he is frugal. He says he does this because the things he loves most are very inexpensive.
With these few super-star athletes showing modesty despite their huge bank accounts, it is safe to say that those who have it do not necessarily feel the need to flaunt it.
