There are many reasons a person will replace a vehicle. For example, their current vehicle may be facing the end of a lease, or the vehicle may have become a mechanical nightmare, or the car is so old that the vehicle has had its wheels driven off of it. Regardless of the motivation to get rid of a vehicle, even more interesting are the reasons a person might select a replacement vehicle, such as a better fit for a growing family or downsizing. For those looking at the fuel efficiency data of new vehicles as their sole source for making a buying decision, what follows will be a collection of Toyota vehicles that achieve forty miles per gallon or more.

The Data

The list below includes multiple classes of vehicles and price ranges. Starting prices and mileage figures are as stated on Toyota.com. Only one vehicle is a crossover. The rest of the vehicles on the list are sedans, coupes, or hatchbacks. Also worth noting is that some of the vehicles are traditional gasoline engine cars, while others are hybrids, plug-in hybrids, or even hydrogen fuel cell equipped. Those vehicles that do not use gasoline at all have their fuel mileage rated ad “MPGe”. According to US News and World Report,

“MPGe is the abbreviation for “miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent.” It’s an energy efficiency metric that was introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2010 to compare the amount of energy consumed by alternative fuel vehicles to that of traditional gas-powered cars. If a vehicle uses non-liquid fuels that aren’t burned and gets its power from electricity or compressed natural gas, it’s rated in MPGe. This is the calculation you will see on an electric car’s window sticker.”

Twenty years ago, it was an oddity to see a new vehicle achieve over 40 miles per gallon. Since then, it is obvious that manufacturers have been hard at work continuing to engineer vehicles toward more fuel efficiency, and away from the dependency we once had to fossil fuels. Vehicles that achieve forty or more miles per gallon can be found in multiple manufacturer line-ups. As can be seen by the list above, Toyota has done a good job across its own model line of representing the miserly fuel sippers.
