The electric car revolution is on! As of this month, there are 13 new electric vehicle battery plants planned for the next five years. Major automakers like GM and Ford are in the lead right now, but others are likely to follow suit soon enough to keep up with EV demand.

GM has the most electric vehicle battery plants planned

According to the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, GM is in the lead. GM (General Motors) has four electric vehicle battery plants planned for the next five years. The first is a joint venture between GM and LG Chem in Lordstown, Ohio. This plant is planned for next year. The next electric vehicle battery plant is between GM and LG Energy Solution in Spring Hill, Tennessee in 2023. GM and LG Energy Solution have two more facilities scheduled for a to be determined time and location.

GM hopes that producing batteries locally will help lower the cost of electric vehicles over time. The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq is assembled in Spring Hill, fairly close to where the new battery production factory is planned. The Lyriq is one of the first electric vehicles as the lineup changes to focus on electric over gas-power. After that, the Hummer EV is well on its way to production.

The plants will create around 1,300 new jobs for each center. This will allow the U.S. to create its own supply chain to keep up with demands. Currently, most of the batteries used in U.S. electric vehicles are made in Asia and Europe.

Ford has three electric vehicle battery plants in the works

Ford has an EV battery plant planned for near Memphis, Tennessee in 2025. That same year, Ford and SK Innovation plan to make two “twin” plants in Glendale, Kentucky. According to Ford’s press release, these factories will provide about 11,000 new jobs when the doors open in 2025 and 2026.

Ford has vowed to ramp up production on the Ford F-150 Lightning truck, E-Transit, and Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles as demand is quite high right now. By building these new plants, the automaker will be able to do that. Right now, Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, is handling most of the EV production.

Toyota, Stellantis, and Volkswagen also have big plans

SK Innovation has another two plants planned for near Atlanta, Georgia in 2022 and 2023. Stellantis and LG Energy Solution have an electric vehicle battery plant planned for 2024 in an unknown location. Another joint venture between Stellantis and Samsung SDI is also planned for an unknown location in 2025.

Toyota has a plant scheduled for 2025 around Greensboro, North Carolina. Finally, Volkswagen has something planned for Chattanooga, Tennessee at an unknown time. While these are the plans now, it is likely more of these facilities will show up soon. If you have a factory nearby, watch out for changes in the production lineup as EVs become more popular.
