Some people are just bad drivers, no matter what kind of car, truck, or SUV it is. Insurify is back with a new study that found that while some people are bad drivers, some brands are more accident-prone. These top five brands get into the most accidents, with the Ram pickup truck brand taking the cake for the most accidents.

Ram is the pickup truck brand with the most accidents

Insurify looked at 4.6 million car insurance applications to determine which brands get into the most accidents. Those five brands are Ram, Subaru, Volkswagen, Mazda, and Hyundai. So far, in 2022, the national average for drivers with at least one at-fault accident on record is 9.25%. Kelley Blue Book data also shows the average price of a new car in May 2022 is $47,148, up 13% over last year.

Insurify also found that there is a correlation between accident-prone brands and speed-prone brands.

“Data scientists at Insurify found a very strong, significant correlation (R = 0.72, p < 0.05) between an auto brand’s at-fault accident rate and its speeding rate, meaning that automobile manufacturers with the most accident-prone drivers are also more likely to have lead-footed drivers, too.”

Looking for the safest brand out there? Volvo drivers have the fewest accidents, coming in at 5.81%. That’s 37% lower than the national average.

The Ram pickup truck brand clocks 10.82% of drivers with an at-fault accident on record

To find this information, Insurify looks at car insurance applications. Drivers must disclose information such as violations or accidents from the last seven years. Using the data point of drivers with one or more at-fault accidents on record and the type of car looking to be insured shows which brands are at the top.

The Subaru WRX is actually the model with the most speeding tickets for the last few years, so watch out before getting into one of those. The Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup truck is the worst offender overall.

With the same information, Insurify also determined which cars from each brand were the most popular for accident-prone drivers. The table above shows the worst offending brands and the “worst offending” model information for those accident-prone drivers. The “best behaved” column shows the model with the least percentage of drivers reporting an at-fault accident.

No matter what car, truck, or SUV you are in, buckle up

Ram 3500 pickup truck drivers are the most accident-prone of all makes and models who applied for insurance. These drivers are 53% more accident prone than the national average. Those who drive a Ram truck are 17% more likely than the average driver to have caused an accident in the last seven years. Even the best-behaved drivers of the ProMaster 1500 are still 11% more accident-prone.

Cars, trucks, and SUVs are safer nowadays, but you should always buckle up. Even if you aren’t getting into a Ram pickup truck, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says seatbelts save lives.
